In Being and Time, Martin Heidegger developed a way of considering human existence as ‘being there’, a process of interrelationships with aspects of the environment in which the very process itself constitutes the essence of human being. From Heidegger to Performance engages with this radical perspective and consider Heidegger’s thinking in relation to different senses of performance, from the familiar, such as theatrical contexts of dance, live art and theatre, to explorations of modes of being within these performative situations. The contributors engage with a wide variety of topics from clowning to questions of linguistic construction; from the phenomenology of objects in stage space to the ephemerality of performance; from the performance of personal memory to the anxiety of the moment of choice in performing a complex movement. This book explores the ways in which Heidegger’s work and ideas of performance and performativity intersect, across their various senses and usages and will be useful to scholars, teachers and students who are interested in thinking about performance, and themselves as performative, in new ways.

This book traces an engagement between intercultural dance company Marrugeku and unceded lands of the Yawuru, Bunuba, and Nyikina in the north west of Australia. In the face of colonial legacies and extractive capitalism, it examines how Indigenous ontologies bring ecological thought to dance through an entangled web of attachments to people, species, geologies, political histories, and land. Following choreographic interactions across the multiple subject positions of Indigenous, settler, and European artists between 2012–2016 the book closely examines projects such as Yawuru/Bardi dancer and choreographer Dalisa Pigram’s solo Gudirr Gudirr (2013) and the multimedia work Cut the Sky (2015). This book is about dance’s relationship to language. It investigates how dance bodies work with the micromovements elicited by language’s affective forces, and the micropolitics of the thought-sensations that arise when movement and words accompany one another within choreographic contexts. Situating itself where theory meets practice—the zone where ideas arise to be tested, the book draws on embodied research in practices within the lineages of American postmodern dance and Japanese butoh, set in dialog with affect-based philosophies and somatics. Understanding that language is felt, both when uttered and when unspoken, this book speaks to the choreographic thinking that takes place when language is considered a primary element in creating the sensorium.
