Concern about the status of the Finnish language
There is concern about the position of the Finnish language among the world's languages. Social interaction, motivation and private tutoring are the main themes of the book, the focus of which is reading, reading comprehension and writing. The topics become concrete when the author starts implementing the Teaching Granny project. Literacy is the basis of all learning and the development of thinking skills. After explaining the concepts related to speaking, listening, reading, and writing, the book introduces the stages of the Teaching Granny project. Part 1 emphasizes the importance of reading aloud. by proceeding from history to theories and further to practical skills. Part 2 presents reading comprehension theories, reading strategies, research and supporting S2 students. Part 3 focuses on writing by stating the current situation and presents theories and research. Part 4 is a reflection chapter. The author reflects on her experiences as a Teaching Granny. The appendices present the content of the project in both English and Finnish, give instructions to support writing and mention good habits.

Kirja pohjautuu tietoon puheen, kielen, ajattelun ja lukutaidon kehityksestä. Millaista on taitava lukeminen ja mitkä osatekijät vaikuttavat siihen? Kirjassa esitellään kesäkouluja Suomessa ja muualla sekä selostetaan HELPPO-kesäkoulun tavoitteet, toteutus ja arviointi. Lopuksi pohditaan kesäkoulukokeilun merkitystä laajemmassa kehyksessä. The book is based on knowledge of the development of speech, language, thinking and literacy. What is proficient reading like and what factors influence it? The book presents summer schools in Finland and elsewhere and explains the goals and targets, implementation and evaluation of the HELPPO (=EASY) summer school. Finally, the significance of the summer school experiment in a broader context is discussed.
Research on SEL-programs and their use in schools
Social interaction is a key factor in schools between students and between students and teachers and other adults. Interaction is needed daily in homes and across societies. Could social emotional skills be systematically taught to students? Would skills have a connection to motivation? A review of the literature clarifies what SEL-programs are. The development of the child's overall personality is divided into sub-areas and theories supporting the research of the programs are presented. In addition, instructions are given, results are discussed, and research related to the topic is presented. Finally, the issue is considered in a broader context.
