Bis(dimethylamino)-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)naphthalene (3) and 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)-4-diphenylphosphonaphthalene (5b) were synthesized as ESI-active analogues of the common organometallic ligands?6-anisole and triphenylphosphine. The water-soluble phosphine, sodium triphenylphosphine monosulfonate, was re-purposed as an ESI-active ligand. Its solubility in organic solvents and amenability to electrospray ionization was improved by replacing Na+ with the non-coordinating bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium cation. A new sample introduction method named PSI (pressurized sample infusion) was developed for the continuous infusion of air/moisture-sensitive samples into the mass spectrometer. The flow rat...

Reactive Intermediates

During the last two decades there has been considerable growth in the development of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) as a practical method in the study of reaction mechanisms. This method allows the interception and characterization of key intermediates, either as transient species or as protonated/deprotonated forms of neutral species by API-MS. The outstanding features and advantages of ESI-MS make it one of the most suitable tools for the fast screening of intermediates directly from solution, providing hitherto unavailable chemical information to organic chemists. This monograph provides an overview of the mechanisms involved in ESI-MS, the historical perspectives before looking further in-depth at specific reactions and intermediates. Written by researchers in the field, this book is an unique resource for the understanding of this cutting-edge technique.

Machine Learning in Chemistry

Recent advances in machine learning or artificial intelligence for vision and natural language processing that have enabled the development of new technologies such as personal assistants or self-driving cars have brought machine learning and artificial intelligence to the forefront of popular culture. The accumulation of these algorithmic advances along with the increasing availability of large data sets and readily available high performance computing has played an important role in bringing machine learning applications to such a wide range of disciplines. Given the emphasis in the chemical sciences on the relationship between structure and function, whether in biochemistry or in materials chemistry, adoption of machine learning by chemistsderivations where they are important

Veterinary Cytology

This book offers a state-of-the-art, evidence-based reference to all aspects of veterinary cytology. Truly multidisciplinary in its approach, chapters are written by experts in fields ranging from clinical pathology to internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, and dermatology, drawing the various specialties together to create a comprehensive picture of cytology's role in diagnosis and treatment of animal disease. Firmly grounded in the primary literature, the book focuses on companion animals, with special chapters for species with fewer publications. Chapters are logically organized by body system, with additional chapters on tumors of particular import and diagnostic decision making. The...

Anderson Anderson, Architecture and Construction

Brothers Mark and Peter Anderson have been building things together since their boyhood days in Tacoma, Washington. Their work as architects, carpenters, builders, and general contractors encompasses the design and construction of residential, commercial, and public art projects. Anderson Anderson is noted for its highly customized work and its prefabricated systems for large-scale production. Informed by their experiences as carpenters and influenced by place and landscape—mud, clouds, and rain, in the case of the Pacific Northwest—the work of Mark and Peter Anderson highlights experimentation and adventure. Anderson Anderson: Architecture and Construction delves into the process of con...

In this fast-paced and lively account, Jim Lang asks—and mostly answers—the questions that confront every new faculty member as well as those who dream of becoming new faculty members: Will my students like me? Will my teaching schedule allow me time to do research and write? Do I really want to spend the rest of my life in this profession? Is anyone awake in the backrow? Lang narrates the story of his first year on the tenure track with wit and wisdom, detailing his moments of confusion, frustration, and even elation—in the classroom, at his writing desk, during his office hours, in departmental meetings—as well as his insights into the lives and working conditions of faculty in higher education today. Engaging and accessible, Life on the Tenure Track will delight and enlighten faculty, graduate students, and administrators alike.
