There is growing interest within the climate change and development community in using seasonal forecast information to reduce the losses to agriculture resulting from climate variability, especially within food-insecure countries. However, forecast systems are expensive to establish and maintain, and therefore gauging the potential economic return to investments in forecast systems is crucial. Agroclimatology
Can we unlock resilience to climate stress by better understanding linkages between the environment and biological systems? Agroclimatology allows us to explore how different processes determine plant response to climate and how climate drives the distribution of crops and their productivity. Editors Jerry L. Hatfield, Mannava V.K. Sivakumar, and John H. Prueger have taken a comprehensive view of agroclimatology to assist and challenge researchers in this important area of study. Improving effective use of seasonal forecasts in South Africa
The study showed that El Niño no longer strikes the same fear as it used to, even in the agricultural sector where the negative impacts of the 1997-98 and 1982-83 events are within living memory. The widespread drought associated with the El Niño event of 2015/16 (subsequent to this study) may, however, reverse this trend and promote greater interest in the role of ENSOs in seasonal forecasts. There is little demand for El Niño-specific forecasts outside of agricultural research. However there is evidence for the use of seasonal forecasts in the agriculture, water and disaster preparedness and response sectors in South Africa.
Consent in European Data Protection Law
Today, consent is a fundamental concept in the European legal framework on data protection. The analysis of the historical and theoretical context carried out in this book reveals that consent was not an intrinsic notion in the birth of data protection. The concept of consent was included in data protection legislation in order to enhance the role of the data subject in the data protection arena, and to allow the data subject to have more control over the collection and processing of his/her personal information. This book examines the concept of consent and its requirements in the Data Protection Directive, taking into account contemporary considerations on bioethics and medical ethics, as well as recent developments in the framework of the review of the Directive. It further studies issues of consent in electronic communications, carrying out an analysis of the consent-related provisions of the ePrivacy Directive.
