Ormond Beach
The Ormond Beach area's earliest known inhabitants were the Timucua Indians, whose primitive, blunt-nosed canoes skimmed the waters of the Halifax and Tomoka Rivers in northeast Volusia County. Soon, hardy settlers also made their way to the area--brothers John Andrew and Charles Bostrom were attracted by the mighty oaks and sparkling spring water in 1868 and were soon followed by other rugged visionaries. As the town grew, entrepreneurs began their work, and one of the most famous area landmarks, the Hotel Ormond, was opened in 1888. At the turn of the century, the hard-packed white sands of the nearby beach became a natural proving ground for gas- and steam-driven horseless carriages--the original "birthplace of speed." The region was blessed with abundant resources, a mild and inviting climate, and natural beauty, all of which served to entice John D. Rockefeller, perhaps Ormond Beach's most famous resident, to spend his winters in the area. His three-story home now serves the community as a cultural center and museum.

Each of the 119 fully refereed presentations is published here for the first time and was selected because of its original contribution to the science and engineering of how materials, bridges, buildings, tunnels and their components, such as beams and pre-stressed parts, respond to potentially destructive forces. Emphasis is placed on translating empirical data to design recommendations for strengthening structures, including strategies for fire and earthquake protection as well as blast mitigation. Technical details are provided on the development and behavior of new resistant materials, including reinforcements, especially for concrete, steel and their composites.
Nordic Best Practices
The working group on Sustainable Consumption and Production, under the Nordic Council of Ministers requested consultants from Gaia to identify and write out best Nordic practice cases of sustainable consumption and production to be shared internationally within the UNEP SCP Clearinghouse. This report is the second part and covers in total 19 examples of two particular themes on: 1) Sustainable Tourism 2) Consumer Information The cases have also been added into the UNEP’s 10 Year Frame-work Program (10YFP) information platform, the SCP Clearinghouse. The objective is to enhance international cooperation in order to accelerate a shift towards sustainable consumption and production in developed and developing countries. The SCP Clearinghouse is a web-based information sharing tool, which can be used by different actors as an inspiration for advancing SCP worldwide.

The book is divided into independent chapters dealing with degradation reactions in concrete exposed to high temperatures; mass transport properties; thermal properties; and mechanical properties. The results presented especially target a group of users composed by universities and testing laboratories, building material companies and industries, material scientists and experts, building and infrastructure authorities, designers and civil engineers.
