Global Language Justice

More than 40 percent of the world’s estimated 7,100+ languages are in danger of disappearing by the end of this century. As with the decline of biodiversity, language loss has been attributed to environmental degradation, developmentalism, and the destruction of Indigenous communities. This book brings together leading experts and younger scholars across the humanities and social sciences to investigate what global language justice looks like in a time of climate crisis. Examining the worldwide loss of linguistic diversity, they develop a new conception of justice to safeguard marginalized languages. Global Language Justice explores the socioeconomic transformations that both accelerate th...

Race in the Multiethnic Literature Classroom

The contemporary rethinking and relearning of history and racism has sparked creative approaches for teaching the histories and representations of marginalized communities. Cristina Stanciu and Gary Totten edit a collection that illuminates these ideas for a variety of fields, areas of education, and institutional contexts. The authors draw on their own racial and ethnic backgrounds to examine race and racism in the context of addressing necessary and often difficult classroom conversations about race, histories of exclusion, and racism. Case studies, reflections, and personal experiences provide guidance for addressing race and racism in the classroom. In-depth analysis looks at attacks on ...

But the road from acquisition to cataloging these underground, self-published, and often fragile items can be difficult. This reso...

A Farmer’S World

Harvey Devoe (1828-1914) farmed most of his life, and kept a diary for one significant year of that life, 1861. The diary, transcribed here in its entirety, gives a day-by-day view of the life and hard work of a mid nineteenth entury farmer, and the coming of a national tragedy. Illustrated with family pictures and annotated for a clearer view, Devoes words are both humorous and sarcastic, and although brief, give a unique look into a vanished world.
