Concern and debate over the role of religion in the make up of the United Kingdom is a contemporaneously relevant as it was in the nineteenth century. God and Greater Britain is a survey of the contribution of religion to society, politics, culture and national self-understanding in Britain and Ireland at a pivotal period in their historical development. It derives from primary research as well as from an extensive synthesis of the secondary literature. John Wolffe's timely and stimulating appraisal of the centrality of religion is well illustrated with specific episodes and uniquely places religion in a firm historical perspective.

"In October 1757, Thomas Haweis, a young Cornishman, was ordained to the curacy of St Mary Magdalen church in Oxford. Haweis's ministry rapidly stirred strong reactions. According to Charles Wesley, a co-founder of Methodism, he preached 'Christ crucified, with amazing success, ' and drew large crowds both from the University and the city. On the other hand, students jeered Haweis in the street, shouting 'There goes the saver of souls!': stones were thrown through the church windows while he was preaching, and 'This is the back way to Hell' was chalked on the church doors. More orderly, but ultimately more effective, critics eventually forced Haweis to leave Oxford in 1762. Not to be repress...

This two-volume set considers the role and significance of religion in post-war Britian, focusing, in particular, upon the closely inter-related themes of the decline of a specifically `Christian Society' and the emergence of a culturally and religiously plural society. Three core questions are examined in depth: to what extent and in what ways has religion remained a significant factor in British culture and society in the period since 1945?, what role does religion play in interpreting and understanding the development of a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic society in post-war Britain?, and to what extent has Britain remained (or ceased to be) a `religious society' during this period. Pioneer Missionary, Evangelical Statesman

'This account of a fascinating and neglected life makes a significant contribution to our knowledge of twentieth century British evangelicalism and overseas missions.' (John Wolffe, Professor of Religious History, Open University) 'The family lived through stirring times and Canon Houghton's life was one of some drama, subject like St Paul to shipwreck and some dangers on the mission field, followed by much labour at home for the missionary society and many other Christian bodies and causes.' (Timothy Yates, author) 'One of the Lord's great servants on earth. He was not only a dedicated evangelical leader in Britain, but a warm personal friend and supporter of mine for which I am very grateful.' (Billy Graham) 'His life and character exemplified the four marks of the Christian Church mentioned by our Lord: a concern for truth, a concern for holiness, a concern for mission, and a concern for unity.' (John Stott) 'Canon Houghton, a missionary statesman and a man of great stature. He was invariably supportive and encouraging.' (John B. Taylor, former Bishop of St Albans)

By focusing on two countries whose religious establishement and experience were markedly different, and by adopting a comparative approach, the book is able to offer an unusual perspective on the challenges facing the Catholic church in the modern world and on its impact not only on believers, but also on the two societies as a whole.
