Psychological Foundations of Education

Psychological Foundations of Education presents some of the principles of psychology that are relevant to learning and teaching. It presents an alternative answer to the problem of the bifurcation of general and educational psychology in the curriculum of teacher preparation. While the solution is provisional and has obvious imperfections, it is offered in the hope that it may stimulate discussion of the problem and other solutions and/or explicit justifications for past practice. Key concepts discussed include teachers’ attitudes and behavior, different types of learning, technology in education, forgetting and extinction, child development, and intelligence measurements. Also covered are the assessment of educational achievement, the social psychology of the classroom, and education in urban schools. This text should have a variety of uses in classes where students are preparing for teaching. It was written specifically for those situations in which the prospective teacher is introduced to psychology through a one- or two-semester integrated sequence.

Together, chapters Two and Three show how advantage increases if pluralism is planned and deliberate, whether at the stage of formulating problems and conducting research or at the stage of synthesizing and interpreting the findings of multiple studies. No single study is likely to yield findings that we should consider definitive. The same can probably be said of program evaluations. Certainly no single study can teach us much of what we need to know. Chapter Two, on critical multiplism, describes an overall strategy for the conduct of research. This strategy is applicable to the aggregate efforts of a set of researchers working on problems in common, but it also has implications for the planning of individual research.

The Sicilian Mafia

Blood ceremonies, obscure symbols, elaborate codes, brutal executions: the arcane remnants of a defunct culture? The Mafia, this book suggests, is not nearly as bizarre as all that, not nearly as remote as we might think. In fact, as Diego Gambetta's analysis unfolds, the Mafia begins to resemble any other business. In a society where trust is in short supply, this business sells protection, a guarantee of safe conduct for commercial and social transactions. It grudgingly shares the market with other concerns like itself, of which it is merely the most successful. The author develops his elegant economic theory with ample evidence, much of it based on the remarkable work done by Judge Giovan...
