Skin Colour Politics
The global practice of skin bleaching is predominantly understood as an internalized legacy of colonialism and an embodiment of Western ideals of beauty. This book offers a new perspective on fair skin preference in India: it challenges the assumption that desires for light skin are always a desire of whiteness. Rather than talking back to the colonial centre, skin colour politics reorganise and reinforce social distinctions in Indian societies, which are neither exclusively local nor global. Based on primary research conducted in Delhi, this multi-dimensional study shows how skin colour intersects with and reproduces other categories of social distinction – primarily gender, class, caste, race, region and religion. It historically embeds fairness as an Indian, precolonial yet transnational ideal of beauty. The bleached body emerges as an active and thus, potentially resistant part of negotiating social status within multiple power relations and complex beauty regimes. By mapping a whole geography of skin colours in India, this book shows how fair skin as a locally embedded beauty norm and whiteness as a global cultural imperative interrelate.
Decolonial Mourning and the Caring Commons
This book is the product of an endless individual and collective process of mourning. It departs from the author’s mourning for her parents, their histories and struggles in Germany as Gastarbeiter, while it also engages with the political mourning of intersectional feminist movements against feminicide inCentral and South America; the struggles against state and police misogynoir violence of #SayHerName in the United States; the resistance of refugees and migrantized people against the coloniality of migration in Germany; and the intense political grief work of families, relatives, and friends who lost their loved ones in racist attacks from the 1980s until today in Germany. Bearing witness to their stories and accounts, this book explores how mourning is shaped both by its historical context and the political labor of caring commons, while it also follows the building of a conviviality infrastructure of support against migration-coloniality necropolitics, dwelling toward transformative and reparative practices of common justice.

Osteuropäische „Armutszuwanderung“ in München
Im Jahr 2014 kulminierten die Auseinandersetzungen um „Armutsmigration“ und den damit verbundenen Ausschluss von BulgarInnen und RumänInnen in München. Für ein paar Monate patroullierte ein Sicherheitsdienst im Bahnhofsviertel, die Zollbehörde vollzog bereits seit geraumer Zeit mehr und mehr Überprüfungen und ein Bettelverbot wurde erlassen. Doch wie kam es zu dieser Kulmination? Welche Position nahmen dabei Medien, Politik, Verwaltung und MigrantInnen ein? Welche Ausschlüsse wurden so produziert? Der vorliegende Band geht diesen Fragen aus der Perspektive der ethnografischen Grenzregimeanalyse nach. Beleuchtet werden so vor allem prototypische Problemkonstellationen und Strategien besagter ZuwanderInnen, die Entwicklung des Umgangs mit „Armutszuwanderung“ in München sowie die Wechselwirkung zwischen diesen beiden Phänomenen. Deutlich wird hier, dass es sich bei der Regierung dieser Migration um einen komplexen und auch nahezu zirkulären Wirkmechanismus handelt. Denn es sind gerade die Grenzziehungen, die neuartige Probleme verursachen und somit auch stets neue Restriktionen.
