Green Apple Red Book portrays the American Dream and the Chinese Dream from the perspective of a first-generation Chinese-American born during the Cultural Revolution who came to America after the Tiananmen Square student protest. The book juxtaposes the story of two immigrant families caught in the crossfire of a real-life legal drama with the author s intimate narrative of searching for truth, love, and her own identity by trial and error. The American and Chinese systems of values and justice are in contrast, as the author shows the reversals of fortune and changes of fate and ambition in China and the U.S. through her journey. With a suburban life and worldly experience, Rebecca Li-Huang...

Regional Inequality in Transitional China

This book investigates uneven regional development in China – with particular focus on the cases of Guangdong and Zheijiang provinces – which have been at the forefront of debate since Chinese economic reform. Rapid economic growth since the ‘opening-up’ of China has been accompanied by significant disparities in the regional distribution of income: this book represents one of the most recent studies to present a picture of this inequality. Built upon a multi-scale and multi-mechanism framework, it provides systematic examination of both the patterns and mechanisms of regional development and inequality in provincial China, emphasizing the effects of economic transition. Approaching from a geographical perspective, its authors consider the interplay between the local, the state, and the global forces in shaping the landscape of regional inequality in China. Extensive empirical findings will prove useful to those researching other developing countries within the frontier of globalization and economic transition. Regional Inequality in Transitional China will appeal to scholars and students of geography, economics and Chinese studies more broadly.

Jingshin Physics Symposium In Memory Of Prof Wolfgang Kroll

Dr W Kroll, a young post-doc working under Heisenberg at Leipzing in the 1930s, was forced to escape from the Nazis and eventually came to the National Taiwan University in 1941. He taught many of the advanced courses in theoretical physics for over two decades, and prepared a generation of physicists in Taiwan. A symposium on pure and applied physics was held in memory of Prof Kroll at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in August 1996. These proceedings, composed of papers contributed to the symposium by many of Prof Kroll's former students now reaching professorial ranks in the West, reflect in a small measure the legacy he left behind.
