Educational Memory of Chinese Female Intellectuals in Early Twentieth Century
This book studies three female Chinese intellectuals in the first half of the 20th century, namely Feng Yuanjun, Lu Yin, and Cheng Junying, the first graduates of Beijing Female Higher Normal College, which was the first-ever national higher educational institution for women in modern China. Combining narrative inquiry, life history, oral history, and psychohistory methods, it comprehensively explores the specific developmental paths and mental processes of the post-May Fourth female intellectuals, and examines the complex interrelationships between various factors including social, academic, gender, and educational evolution in the first half of the 20th century, and the emergence of modern Chinese female intellectuals. Karst in China
This is the first study of the karst areas of China to be carried out by a Western geomorphologist, and almost all the sources are from Chinese works, as yet unpublished in the West. Karst areas are sensitive to environmental influences and Chinese attempts to deal with these are discussed here, as are Chinese methods of studying karst since they differ somewhat from those in the West. Finally, the author compares karst areas in Europe and elsewhere with those in China. The book is illustrated by numerous diagrams from Chinese sources as well as the author's own photographs.

Das Reisen gehort zu den wichtigsten kulturstiftenden und kulturerneuernden menschlichen Aktivitaten. Weniger offensichtlich ist die Tatsache, dass das Reisen auch eine kulturell geformte und nach kulturspezifischen Mustern gedeutete Aktivitat ist. Diesem Aspekt widmet sich das Buch, indem es den literarischen Ausdeutungen des Reisens im chinesischen Reisebericht der Ming- und Qing-Zeit nachgeht. Ein einleitender Teil erlautert die geistesgeschichtlichen und sozialen Koordinaten, innerhalb derer chinesische Reiseliteratur dieser Zeit zu verstehen ist. Im zweiten Teil wird anhand ausgewahlter Autoren eine Geschichte der chinesischen Reiseliteratur vom 16. bis zum 19. Jahrhundert skizziert; besondere Betonung liegt hierbei auf der Eigendynamik der Reisebegeisterung der schreibenden Elite wahrend der ausgehenden MingZeit und auf dem Bruch, den die Ablosung der chinesischen Ming durch die "barbarische" QingDynastie fur diese Bewegung bedeutete. Der dritte Teil schliesslich lost sich weitgehend von der historischen Betrachtungsweise, um in der Zusammenschau der literarischen Verfahrensweisen einer Vielzahl von Texten eine Poetik des chinesischen Reiseessays (youji) zu entwerfen.
