The Australian Dress Register is a collaborative, online project about dress pre 1945. This includes men's, women's and children's clothing ranging from the special occasion to the everyday. Museums and private collectors are encouraged to research their garments and share the stories and photographs while the information is still available and within living memory. The register encourages people to consider their collections very broadly and share what they know about members of their community, what they wore and life in the past. This provides access to a world wide audience while keeping their garments in their relevant location. This booklet provides all the information and resources you will need to help you document the garments in your collection and submit the entries to the Australian Dress Register.

Shows how Australian women have created their own sense of national and regional identity through their dress and in so doing puts a new slant on the history of Australian women's fashion in the twentieth century. This book argues that Australian women's fashions may be superficially derivative, but that there are patterns of dress.

Most convicts arriving in New South Wales didn’t expect to make their fortunes. Some went on to great success, but countless convicts and free migrants struggled with limited prospects, discrimination and misfortune. Many desperate people turned to The Benevolent Society, Australia’s first charity founded in 1813, for assistance and sustenance. In this rich and revealing book, Tanya Evans collaborates with family historians to present the everyday lives of these people. We see many families who have fallen on hard times because of drink, unwanted pregnancy, violence, unemployment or plain bad luck, seeking help and often shunted from asylums or institutions. In the careful tracing of families, we see the way in which disadvantage can be passed down from one generation to the next. The extensive archives of The Benevolent Society allow us to reclaim these unknown lives and understand our history better, not to mention the often random nature of betterment and progress.

Hand-woven aprons were a key element of the traditional costume worn by women in Macedonian villages until the mid 20th century. The aprons were made by brides, mothers and grandmothers and were worn for everyday use and special occasions. Each village had traditional designs and the choice of colours and patterns reflected the different rites of passage of a woman's life. For a group of women now living in the Illawarra in NSW, a journey of migration to Australia transformed their aprons from an integral part of daily life into a lasting memento of a former way of life. A powerful juxtaposition of colour and patterns, a selection of their aprons are showcased in this book to tell the stories of their lives and creativity, their villages and traditions.

Feeling Things

This interdisciplinary essay collection investigates the various interactions of people, feelings, and things throughout premodern Europe. It focuses on the period before mass production, when limited literacy often prioritised material methods of communication. The subject of materiality has been of increasing significance in recent historical inquiry, alongside growing emphasis on the relationships between objects, emotions, and affect in archaeological and sociological research. The historical intersections between materiality and emotions, however, have remained under-theorised, particularly with respect to artefacts that have continuing resonance over extended periods of time or across ...
