Mabel

Whether considering the art of debate; understanding dialogic teaching methods; the necessity of questioning; or the ability to assess and develop these skills, this book has been written by a classroom teacher, for classroom teachers, in the hope that oracy is dragged out of the shadows and recognised for its significance to improving students’ life skills and future aspirations. When we think about the transferable skills all students will take with them post-academia, oracy, literacy and numeracy should logistically stand proudly side by side. This triad of skillsets are the key components that are used to measure intellectual development in childhood, as well as being further instilled...

This volume celebrates the scholarly and curatorial vision of Kirk Varnedoe (1946-2003). As Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art, N.Y. Varnedoe was one of the most distinguished curators in the United States, and as Professor of Fine Arts at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, a famously dynamic teacher. The nineteen essays, written by Varnedoe's most distinguished doctoral students (now noted art historians in their own right), highlight the wide range of subjects in 19th- and 20th-century art introduced in his pedagogy. Several derive from the collaboration of their authors with Dr. Varnedoe on major exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and elsewhere and offer new insight into these projects. The volume includes introductory essays by the editors and by Varnedoe's colleagues Robert Storr and Robert Rosenblum as well as a full bibliography of Varnedoe's writings.

The Gubbio Studiolo and Its Conservation

  • Categories: Art

The Gubbio studiolo, a small private study that is a masterpiece of Italian Renaissance intarsia, was reinstalled in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1996. It is valued not only for its perspectival inlay - a tour de force of illusionism - but also for its rich historical associations and beauty. Made for Federico da Montefeltro, a fifteenth-century condottiere, the studiolo has intarsia panels that display a dazzling array of the accoutrements of the duke’s life. This treasure trove is rendered with the most admirable understanding of the laws of perspective. The objects depicted and the shadows that give them such volume are composed of thousands of pieces and slivers of different varie...
