Fifty years after the Equal Pay Act of 1963, women still face gender discrimination. Even though the "glass ceiling" has finally been broken for many women, stories of discrimination are still plentiful. Only 6 percent of those filing employment discrimination lawsuits in federal court ever go to trial and of those that do go to trial, a mere one in three has any chance of winning. That is what makes Lisa Shipley's story amazing: Lisa took a stand, fought back-and won. Lisa Shipley was her organization's top performer, an industry star, and well respected by colleagues. She had always been treated fairly and equitably, and loved her work. All of that took a turn when her organization's new C...

Maids and Mistresses, Cousins and Queens

This new collection of sixteen essays considers evidence for the varied forms of women's alliances in early modern England. It shows how women, prohibited from direct participation in the institutional structures that shaped the lives of men, constructed informal connections with other females for purposes of survival, advancement, and creativity. The essays presented here consider a variety of communities--formed among groups as diverse as serving women, vagrants, aristocrats, and authors--in order to study the historical traces of women's connections. "Alliance"--as understood by the essayists in this volume--does not preclude competition or antagonism, since the bonds among women were fre...

The Ecology of Browsing and Grazing

This volume investigates how large herbivores not only influence the structure and distribution of the vegetation, but also affect nutrient flows and the responses of associated fauna. The mechanisms and processes underlying the herbivores' behavior, distribution, movement and direct impact on the vegetation are discussed in detail. It is shown that an understanding of plant/animal interactions can inform the management of large herbivores to integrate production and conservation in terrestrial systems.

Seeking Gender Equality

Monique Aguilar began her career working for El Paso County as a secretary in the Facilities Management Department. Twenty years into her career, she was promoted to Facilities manager, the first woman to hold that title, and the salary was immediately reduced by $38,000. She complained for three years of equal pay discrimination, only to be told that HR was “working on it.” Monique also experienced relentless sex-based harassment when she was promoted over a man who didn’t believe a woman could do the job of a Facilities manager. She reported the harassment thirteen times to seven different supervisors, five of whom were women. Monique resigned in April 2015 when the work environment became so toxic and hostile she could no longer subject herself to the daily abuse. She subsequently filed a lawsuit for equal pay discrimination and sex-based harassment. The lawsuit was settled eight years later.

The Economics of Art and Culture

The 2001 second edition of this survey of the economics of - and public policy towards - the fine arts and performing arts covers arts at federal, state, and local levels in the United States as well as the international arts sector. The work will interest academic readers in the field and scholars of the sociology of the arts, as well as general readers seeking a systematic analysis of the arts. Theoretical concepts are developed from scratch so that readers with no background in economics can follow the argument. The authors look at the arts' historical growth and then examine consumption and production of the live performing arts and the fine arts, the functioning of arts markets, the financial problems of performing arts companies and museums, and the key role of public policy. A final chapter speculates about the future of art and culture in the United States.
