Naming and Mapping the Gods in the Ancient Mediterranean
Ancient religions are definitely complex systems of gods, which resist our understanding. Divine names provide fundamental keys to gain access to the multiples ways gods were conceived, characterized, and organized. Among the names given to the gods many of them refer to spaces: cities, landscapes, sanctuaries, houses, cosmic elements. They reflect mental maps which need to be explored in order to gain new knowledge on both the structure of the pantheons and the human agency in the cultic dimension. Il volume Στην υγειά μας è l’omaggio festoso e benaugurante che un gruppo folto di amici e colleghi dell’Università degli Studi di Milano e di altri Atenei italiani ha inteso offrire a Giorgio Bejor in segno di stima e affetto al momento del suo pensionamento. Vi sono raccolte riflessioni su temi tanto ampi quanto lo sono i più cari interessi del festeggiato: dai problemi di storia dell’arte ai grandi scavi in Italia e nel Mediterraneo; dai singoli personaggi e oggetti della cultura classica alla profonda passione di Giorgio Bejor per musica, cinema e teatro. Interrupted Narratives and Intersectional Representations in Italian Postcolonial Literature
This book argues for the importance of adopting a postcolonial perspective in analysing contemporary Italian culture and literature. Originally published in Italian in 2018 as Riscrivere la nazione: La letteratura italiana postcoloniale, this new English translation brings to light the connections between the present, the colonial past and the great historical waves of international and intranational migration. By doing so, the book shows how a sense of Italian national identity emerged, at least in part, as the result of different migrations and why there is such a strong resistance in Italy to extending the privilege of italianità, or Italianness, to those who have arrived on Italian soil in recent years. Exploring over 100 texts written by migrant and second-generation writers, the book takes an intersectional approach to understanding gender and race in Italian identity. It connects these literary and cultural contexts to the Italian colonial past, while also looking outwards to a more diffuse postcolonial condition in Europe.
La Mamma
The idea of the “mamma italiana” is one of the most widespread and recognizable stereotypes in perceptions of Italian national character both within and beyond Italy. This figure makes frequent appearances in jokes and other forms of popular culture, but it has also been seen as shaping the lived experience of modern-day Italians of both sexes, as well as influencing perceptions of Italy in the wider world. This interdisciplinary collection examines the invented tradition of mammismo but also contextualizes it by discussing other, often contrasting, ways in which the role of mothers, and the mother-son relationship, have been understood and represented in culture and society over the last century and a half, both in Italy and in its diaspora.
