This publication contains contributions from the First Congress of the International Association for the History of Nephrology held on the island of Kos, Greece, in October 1996. The association was founded in 1994 to foster interest, encourage research and disseminate information on the history of nephrology. The text begins with an examination of the origins of nephrology in various medical writings from Greece, Byzantium and the Renaissance. This is followed by an overview of the history of dialysis and the early beginnings of renal transplantation. The concluding section examines early attempts at the conceptualization of the normal kidney, its diseases and metabolic functions. Cellular Ceramics
Cellular ceramics are a specific class of porous materials which includes among others foams, honeycombs, connected fibers, robocast structures and assembled hollow spheres. Because of their particular structure, cellular ceramics display a wide variety of specific properties which make them indispensable for various engineering applications. Polymer Derived Ceramics
This book presents the foundations of the science of polymer derived ceramics, enriched with many descriptions of applications. Written by a team of selected researchers, the text is a systematic, comprehensive introduction to all phases of polymer derived ceramics from synthesis strategies through properties measurement, and applications. New material is given on the nanolevel structure of PDCs, and it is shown how nano-sized modifications can alter and improve the properties of polymer derived ceramics, including high chemical durability, oxidation resistance, luminescence, and piezo-resistivity.
