Kolektivna monografija, ki jo sestavlja dvajset poglavij izpod peres večinoma slovenskih raziskovalcev in raziskovalk, poskuša inovativno vpeljati nekatere analitične koncepte (kulturni svetniki in njihovi kulti, kulturno svetništvo), z njihovo pomočjo pretresti ustaljene humanistične predstave o procesu kanonizacije oziroma kanonu in na tej podlagi na novo osvetliti izbrane primere. Koncept kulturnega svetništva v tej knjigi služi splošnejšemu premisleku o nacionalizmu kot obliki sekularne oziroma civilne religije. Knjiga pri tem izhaja iz študij kulturnega nacionalizma, ki so od druge tretjine 19. stoletja naprej po vsej Evropi zabeležile razmah nacionalno motiviranega slavljenja »vélikih mož« kulture – pesnikov, pisateljev, skladateljev ter drugih umetnikov in intelektualcev.
