This volume showcases recent high-quality work relating to the pathophysiology, biophysics, monitoring, and treatment of traumatic brain injury and hydrocephalus that was presented at the 15th International Symposium on Intracranial Pressure and Brain Monitoring (ICP), held in Singapore in November 2013. The included papers derive from experts in neurointensive care, physiology, physics, engineering, and neurosurgery who have made important contributions in this translational area of research. All were selected from among oral and oral-poster presentations following a rigorous peer-review process involving the ICP Board members, and their focus ranges from the latest research findings and developments to clinical trials and experimental studies. This collection of papers from ICP 2013 continues the proud tradition of publishing key work from the ICP symposia and will be of interest for all who wish to stay abreast of recent advances in the field.

On the transformation of a favela--an urban success story on the Brazilian coast This illustrated volume documents the transformation of the favela Mãe Luíza, as an example of how to build community, create citizenship and identity, and promote initiative and participation. Alongside a story by Brazilian author Paulo Lins, short articles and essays trace the history of Mãe Luíza from the point of view of local activists, as well as invited authors from various fields. With roughly 15,000 inhabitants, Mãe Luíza, located near the ocean in the Brazilian city of Natal, is a favela with all the familiar grievances. In 1984, Italian transplant Padre Sabino Gentili founded the Centro Sócio. With community participation, the Centro created much-needed social infrastructure. After Padre Sabino's death, the Ameropa Foundation further invested in the infrastructure--efforts that culminated in the construction of a sports arena and a music school designed by Swiss architects, facilities usually lacking on the Brazilian peripheries.

Monetary Union in South America
The integration process of The Common Market of the South (MERCOSUR) has been characterized by serious economic turbulence, including the devaluation of the Brazilian currency and the severe Argentinian monetary crisis. As a response to these difficulties, the adoption of monetary union has emerged as one possible solution to the financial uncertainty which has plagued this region. convinced that nothing less than full monetary union can bring stability to the region and ease the financial fragility of the member countries. This book discusses the future of MERCOSUR, focusing on monetary union and macroeconomic policy co-ordination, and addresses a number of important questions including: is it possible, or even desirable, to achieve monetary integration?; what would the pre-conditions be for establishing such a union?; what would the convergence criteria be for joining the monetary union?; and what are the expected economic consequences for the member countries? of EMU and the lessons which can be learnt by MERCOSUR countries, in terms of the difficult transitions they may have to face.
