The Inquisition Trial of Jerónimo de Rojas, A Morisco of Toledo (1601-1603)
This book includes the whole transcription of the trial of a converted Muslim (Morisco) from Toledo, condemned to die at the stake at the beginning of the 17th century. In their study of the trial, the authors address the question of how and to what extent Inquisition documents can be used as an historical source by contextualizing and analysing its multifaceted aspects as well as its protagonists and participants, victim, witnesses, and inquisitors. The authors elucidate the beliefs and practices of the culprit, situating his ordeal in the framework of Morisco life and its connections with North African Islam. By so doing they shed light on questions of Inquisitorial procedure, witnessing and testimony, the extent of confession, the effects of life in prison, the relations of trust between inmates and the consequences of isolation.
Discourse on the Move
Discourse on the Move is the first book-length exploration of how corpus-based methods can be used for discourse analysis, applied to the description of discourse organization. The primary goal is to bring these two analytical perspectives together: undertaking a detailed discourse analysis of each individual text, but doing so in terms that can be generalized across all texts of a corpus. The book explores two major approaches to this task: 'top-down' and 'bottom-up'. In the 'top-down' approach, the functional components of a genre are determined first, and then all texts in a corpus are analyzed in terms of those components. In contrast, textual components emerge from the corpus analysis in the bottom-up approach, and the discourse organization of individual texts is then analyzed in terms of linguistically-defined textual categories. Both approaches are illustrated through case studies of discourse structure in particular genres: fund-raising letters, biology/biochemistry research articles, and university classroom teaching.

En este sentido, la imagen que tenemos de la vejez no es un concepto inocente, ni fortuito, sino un elemento clave del tratamiento que las personas y la propia sociedad dan a los ancianos, de las políticas diseñadas para la tercera edad y lo que es más importante, del comportamiento y de las expectativas que los ancianos proyectan para sí mismos. Pero en los últimos años los cambios se han venido produciendo de forma constante. Los avances en el campo de la salud y los cambios producidos en las estructuras sociales han hecho que este colectivo haya aumentado significativamente su presencia y su implicación en la sociedad. Este libro responde a la reflexión y al esfuerzo de distintos profesores universitarios, especialistas y profesionales vinculados al tema del envejecimiento analizado desde múltiples facetas, con el convencimiento de que la tercera edad no es en absoluto una edad de tercera.
