Crack

Popular party drugs from the 1980s to the present, crack and its more expensive, purer form, cocaine, have gripped users both rich and poor in the United States. Crack examines the psychological, biomedical, social, and legal aspects of this highly

Design guidelines have been established to prevent catastrophic rim fracture failure modes when considering gear tooth bending fatigue. Analysis was performed using the finite element method with principles of linear elastic fracture mechanics. Crack propagation paths were predicted for a variety of gear tooth and rim configurations. The effects of rim and web thicknesses, initial crack locations, and gear tooth geometry factors such as diametral pitch, number of teeth, pitch radius, and tooth pressure angle were considered. Design maps of tooth/rim fracture modes including effects of gear geometry, applied load, crack size, and material properties were developed. The occurrence of rim fract...

Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 7th International Symposium on the Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics, held at the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia, on July 20-22, 1999. The theme of the symposium focused on the mechanical behavior of advanced ceramics in terms of the cracks, particularly the crack-microstructure interaction, delayed failure, and environmental effects in fracture. Special attention was paid to the novel methods in fracture mechanics testing, pre-standardization and standardization. Authors from 19 countries represented the current state of the field.

An investigation was performed to study the effects of slip character and crack closure on the propagation of small fatigue cracks in titanium- aluminum alloys. The materials examined were solution-treated Ti-4Al and Ti-8Al, as well as aged Ti-8Al. The propagation of naturally initiated surface cracks of depths as small as 25 micrometers was compared with the behavior of large through-thickness cracks. An extensometer was used to monitor crack closure throughout the large crack tests, and the closure behavior of the small cracks was measured using a computerized laser interferometric displacement gage having a displacement resolution of 0.01 micrometer. The measurements of crack closure were...

This book offers a concise introduction to fatigue crack growth, based on practical examples. It discusses the essential concepts of fracture mechanics, fatigue crack growth under constant and variable amplitude loading and the determination of the fracture-mechanical material parameters. The book also introduces the analytical and numerical simulation of fatigue crack growth as well as crack initiation. It concludes with a detailed description of several practical case studies and some exercises. The target group includes graduate students, researchers at universities and practicing engineers.

Shallow Crack Fracture Mechanics Toughness Tests and Applications

Within the last decade there has been an increasing awareness that use of standards deeply notched fracture mechanics test specimens can result in substantial over-or-under-assessments of the real fracture toughness associated with shallow surface cracks.

Small-crack Test Methods

Reviews the most recent methods for testing small cracks in a variety of materials, providing detailed quantitative information on necessary procedures for data acquisition. Emphasizes the characterization of small, three-dimensional fatigue cracks, initiated either naturally or artificially. The ei
