Social scientists work in a wide variety of marine-related fields focusing on such areas as commercial and recreational fishing, coastal zone management, marine resources management, and environmental change. Policy, economics, and social impact assessment are among their topics of interest. Some social scientists are housed in academic institutions in various departments, while others work in consulting firms or government agencies. Recently, dedicated funding has been offered for social science research (e.g., by the National Office of Sea Grant) and diverse social science articles have been published in peer-reviewed journals. Furthermore, social scientists have increasingly been invited ...

"This document contains the New England Fishery Management Council’s recommendations for Framework Adjustment 3 to the Atlantic Herring Fishery Management Plan (FMP), consistent with the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA) and the Herring FMP approved by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) on October 27, 1999. Framework 3 proposes to establish a process for setting and modifying catch caps for river herring and shad (RH/S) in the Atlantic herring fishery. Framework 3 also proposes specific river herring and shad catch caps for the 2014 and 2015 fishing years. This document contains information and supporting analyses required under other applicable law, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Regulatory Flexibility Act (RFA), and Executive Order 12866. The actions proposed in this framework adjustment also relate to management objectives associated with minimizing bycatch in the Atlantic herring fishery, the primary focus of Amendment 5 to the Herring FMP"--Executive Summary (page i).

Abstract.-- Analysis of the perceptions of commerical fishermen, marine scientists, and other stakeholders of the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank ecosystem regarding collaborative fisheries research revealed that the benefits of collaboration have been extensive and that a loss of further research opportunities would be consequential. To date, more than 1,000 individuals have participated in research initiatives dedicated to promoting collaboration between scientists and fishermen. A series of eight public meetings were held in the summer of 2008 to determine from fishermen, scientists, and others how this collaboration has affected them, their communities, and the management of important mar...
