Metaphor and Senses

This book investigates verbal synesthesia in Polish thematic blogs, proposes a new model of verbal synesthesia and argues that hierarchy of senses is not universal. The book examines synesthetic metaphors from the perspective of CMT and frame semantics and provides empirical support for metaphor embodiment and its systematicity.

Coreference

‘Coreference’ presents specificities of reference, anaphora and coreference in Polish, establish identity-of-reference annotation model and present methodology used to create the corpus of Polish general nominal coreference. Various resolution approaches are presented, followed by their evaluation. By discussing the subsequent steps of building a coreference-related component of the natural language processing toolset and offering deeper explanation of the decisions taken, this volume might also serve as a reference book on state-of the art methods of carrying out coreference projects for new languages and a tutorial for NLP practitioners. Apart from serving as a description of the fi rs...

  • Publisher: Routledge

This book approaches the topic of false friends from a theoretical perspective, arguing that false friends carry out a positive role as a cognitive device, mainly in literature and jokes, and suggesting some pragmatic strategies in order to restore the original sense of a text/utterance when a given translator (or a foreign speaker) falls victim to false friends. This theoretical account is successively verified by appealing to texts from the fields of literature, science, philosophy, journalism, and everyday speech.

Studies in Polish Language and Literature

The book offers eight case studies, covering selected problems and works from Renaissance up to the present day. Each chapter draws on a literary text(s) or problems, examining its historical context, as well as its Polish reception and presence in contemporary (pop)culture. The volume delineates a dual perspective, combining original readings of key texts with discussions of their relationship to contemporary theories of literary and linguistic studies, and important phenomena in Polish history.

The Swedish FrameNet++

Large computational lexicons are central NLP resources. Swedish FrameNet++ aims to be a versatile full-scale lexical resource for NLP containing many kinds of linguistic information. Although focused on Swedish, this ongoing effort, which includes building a new Swedish framenet and recycling existing lexicons, has offered valuable insights into general aspects of lexical-resource building for NLP, which are discussed in this book: computational and linguistic problems of lexical semantics and lexical typology, the nature of lexical items (words and multiword expressions), achieving interoperability among heterogeneous lexical content, NLP methods for extending and interlinking existing lexicons, and deploying the new resource in practical NLP applications. This book is targeted at everyone with an interest in lexicography, computational lexicography, lexical typology, lexical semantics, linguistics, computational linguistics and related fields. We believe it should be of particular interest to those who are or have been involved in language resource creation, development and evaluation.
