Sites of Pluralism

Scholars and policymakers, struggling to make sense of the ongoing chaos in the Middle East, have been focusing on the possible causes of the escalation in both inter-state and intra-state conflict. But the Arab Spring has shown the urgent need for new ways to frame difference, both practically and theoretically. Within some policy circles, at the heart of these conflicts lies a fundamental incompatibility between different ethno-linguistic and religious communities; it is held that these divisions impede any form of political resolution or social cohesion. Yet, despite this galvanized public focus on pluralism and 'minorities' within the turbulent Middle East, there has been limited scholar...

The Color Black

In The Color Black, Beeta Baghoolizadeh traces the twin processes of enslavement and erasure of Black people in Iran during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She illustrates how geopolitical changes and technological advancements in the nineteenth century made enslaved East Africans uniquely visible in their servitude in wealthy and elite Iranian households. During this time, Blackness, Africanness, and enslavement became intertwined—and interchangeable—in Iranian imaginations. After the end of slavery in 1929, the implementation of abolition involved an active process of erasure on a national scale, such that a collective amnesia regarding slavery and racism persists today. The erasure of enslavement resulted in the erasure of Black Iranians as well. Baghoolizadeh draws on photographs, architecture, theater, circus acts, newspapers, films, and more to document how the politics of visibility framed discussions around enslavement and abolition during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In this way, Baghoolizadeh makes visible the people and histories that were erased from Iran and its diaspora.

The True Nature of the Mahdi

The history of religion demonstrates that all Prophets have suffered vehement opposition. Like all the prophets of God, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, the Promised Messiah and Mahdi was also opposed. Throughout his life, Maulvi Muhammad Husain of Batala, a staunch opponent, spared no opportunity to harm and malign the Promised Messiah. When all else failed, he began to submit false reports to the British government, alleging that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad was a rebel of the state and believed in the advent of a bloodthirsty, violent Mahdi, who would force all non-Muslims to Islam. It was due to these false reports that the author wrote a brief but eloquent treatise outlining his true beliefs regarding the advent of the Promised Mahdi in Islam. In this book, the author explains that the divinely appointed reformer and Mahdi to appear in the latter days would bring a message of peace and conquer the world with love; not through violence and bloodshed. He also reassures the government of his loyalty to the state and exposes the hypocrisy of Maulvi Muhammad Husain and the falsity of his reports to the government.

The impact that the medieval Persian polymath Omar Khayyam has had on civilization is perhaps best reflected in the reverence held for his groundbreaking mathematical findings and celebrated Rubaiyat (quatrains), not only in his native Iran but also in all corners of the world. Exhorting readers to seize the moment and enjoy the pleasures of life, as well as warning them about the ephemerality and infidelity of the world, Khayyam's philosophies are just as relevant today, if not more than during the turbulent times in which he lived. Providing neither a loose interpretation nor a word-for-word translation of Khayyam's poetry, Bekhrad has striven to preserve the poetic qualities and spirit of the original Persian quatrains, in addition to providing as accurate a translation as possible of each and every stanza. The present volume contains, for bilingual readers, the original Persian poems as selected and categorized by the late Sadegh Hedayat, as well as an introduction by Iranian scholar Dr. Sayed Hassan Amin.

Coming Down Again

One seemingly endless summer in Tehran, Asha, a broken-hearted schoolboy on sleepy Cypress Lane, finds himself with nothing to do. Nothing, that is, except daydream about escaping to London to become a rock and roll star, wait for Keith Richards and the Stones to come on the television, let his imagination run amok in his mum's closet, and pine away in vain for Arezu, the pretty girl upstairs who's hit it off with a classmate of his. Down and out in the manic, bustling Iranian capital, Asha only finds solace in Ghermezi, his battered cherry-red guitar, the pin-ups on his bedroom wall, and his dreams. Though he longs to leave Tehran, in which he sees no place or future for himself, he also ho...

The Mahdi, "the guided one", has been popularly awaited throughout Islamic history as a just and pious leader who would be extremely successful during his reign over the Muslims. This study, based on the author's original PhD thesis written in 1991, aims to investigate the concept of the Mahdi among Ahl al-Sunna according to the methodology of the traditionists. It includes the analysis of over one hundred narrations, mostly found in the Kitab al-Fitan, by Nuʿaim b. Ḥammād (which, in 1991 was only available in manuscript form). Both Sunni and Shi'a literature throng with extensive descriptions of this Mahdi, the concept of which has prompted a great number of people to claim this title t...
