Beyond MAUS. The Legacy of Holocaust Comics collects 16 contributions that shed new light on the representation of the Holocaust. While MAUS by Art Spiegelman has changed the perspectives, other comics and series of drawings, some produced while the Holocaust happened, are often not recognised by a wider public. A plethora of works still waits to be discovered, like early caricatures and comics referring to the extermination of the Jews, graphic series by survivors or horror stories from 1950s comic books. The volume provides overviews about the depictions of Jews as animals, the representation of prisoner societies in comics as well as in depth studies about distorted traces of the Holocaust in Hergé's Tintin and in Spirou, the Holocaust in Mangas, and Holocaust comics in Poland and Israel, recent graphic novels and the use of these comics in schools. With contributions from different disciplines, the volume also grants new perspectives on comic scholarship.
This multi-disciplinary volume is one of the few collections about social change covering various cases of mass violence and genocide. In life under persecution, social relations and social structures were not absent and not simply replaced by an ethno-racial order. The studies in this book show the influence of social structures like gender, age and class on life under persecution. Exploring practices in family and labor relations and of collective action, they counter claims of an atomization of society or total uprootedness of victims. Despite being exposed to poverty and want and under the permanent threat of political violence, persecuted people tried to develop their own agency. Case studies are about the Jewish and Armenian persecutions, Rwanda, the war of decolonization in Mozambique and civilian refuges in Belarus during World War II. The authors are a mix of experienced scholars and young researchers.
A sympathetic history that focuses on the experiences of women and girls during the Holocaust and draws on new archival sources. Beginning in late 1940, over three thousand Jewish girls and young women were forced from their family homes in Sosnowiec, Poland, and its surrounding towns to worksites in Germany. This book, based on the descriptions of their dreams that former Auschwitz inmates wrote in 1973, provides a deep, insightful explanation of the role of dreams in shaping the prisoners’ experiences. It studies these testimonies from a broad, interdisciplinary perspective, analysing the psychological, social, anthropological, narrative and even artistic dimensions of the reports. The book characterises the content of the dreams and their possible meanings, the manners in which the respondents sensed, understood and described their dreams, and the informants’ attitudes towards dreaming. Among thousands of books about the Nazi atrocities, this one is unique because it explores the Holocaust through the prism of dreams. The dream descriptions serve here as an exceptional source of knowledge. They often reveal not only an image of the camp reality, but also the truth that remained unconscious, incomprehensible, and unspeakable for the dreamers themselves. How did “ordinary women,” like their male counterparts, become capable of brutal violence during the Holocaust?
