A Guide To Soil Mechanics

Covers all the soil mechanics and foundation engineering topics that are commonly included in civil engineering degree courses, and provides a number of springboards into related advanced topics. Although it is intended principally to satisfy the needs of student civil engineers, this guide should also prove useful to those practicing engineers who are unaware of the powerful and elegant reconstruction of the subject which has been made possible by the recent concepts of plasticity, dilatancy and critical states.

The piling industry has, in recent years, developed a variety of press-in piling technologies with a view to mitigate noise & vibration nuisance. This book focuses on the "Walk-on-Pile" type press-in piling system, which offers an alternative engineering solution for piling works. This type of piling has unique features, including the application of the compact piling machine using pre-installed piles as a source of reaction force to jack in a new pile by hydraulic pressure. Moreover, the machine can walk along the top of piles already installed, thus enabling piling in a limited space and headroom with minimum disruption to social functions and services of existing infrastructure. These features are opening up a new horizon in piling, leading to novel application of embedded walls previously considered impossible. This introductory book provides a historical development of press-in piling and various challenging applications worldwide as well as scientific research outcomes, forming a valuable source of reference for readers who are unfamiliar with press-in piling, including project owners, design engineers, practical engineers as well as researchers and students.

Ah'm Tellin' Thee - a Biography of Tommy Banks, Bolton Wanderers and England

Tommy Banks...Is this a story that is any different to the plethora of footballers' autobiographies that cram the bookshelves of the High Street retailers? The reality is that this is a story of a very talented, very proud and extremely honourable and dignified man. A man who recognised the wrongs of the professional footballers' contracts in the post-war era and, in his own words and dialect, was determined to "purrit reet." This down to earth charismatic Farnworth lad played an integral and pivotal role in changing the way footballers were treated and paid. There is absolutely no doubt that the celebrity footballers we recognise today bear no comparison to the men that Tommy took up the ca...

Proceedings of the 1990 Specialty Conference on Design and Performance of Earth-Retaining Structures, held in Ithaca, New York, June 18-21, 1990. Sponsored by the Geotechnical Engineering Division of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 50 papers on the design and performance of earth-retaining structures. Topics include historical perspectives, wall selection, contracting practices, waterfront structures, gravity walls, mechanically stabilized systems, cast-in-place walls, soil nailing, tied-back excavations, and seismic design. Papers survey the current state of the practice for earth retention and support, detail the rapid and profound changes to design and construction pr...

Soils are composed of grains but they are generally treated as continua in the classical framework of geomechanics. Their macroscopic response under loading, such as their non-linearity, yielding and anisotropy, is controlled by their micro-structure, the characteristics of the grains and the disposition of contacts between them. There have been rapid advances in technology both to investigate the microscopic properties of soils, and to simulate their granular behaviour explicitly through Discrete Element Method (DEM). DEM was originally used to ...
