This story is about two domestic animals, tomcat Marco and young cockerel Rocco, who impersonate humans. They are best friends, are totally content with their lives and just like to play and have a good laugh. One day Marco and Rocco face grief through the loss of their beloved grandparents and from then on their whole world changes. They have no other choice but to find a new way to live and survive. Although they have a nice wooden cottage which the grandparents had left to them, surrounded by a beautiful green forest, nothing is straightforward in life. With a home comes responsibility and as beautiful as the forest location is, it is fraught with danger as well as excitement. The book aims to help young readers to improve their reading skills through reading for entertainment but the story also helps them to learn about life in general and explores themes around, loyalty, devotion, family togetherness, coping with grief, self-sufficiency and survival. Hopefully the story will also encourage its young readers to understand and develop the power of their own imagination and creativity.

Modern Optimization Modelling Techniques

Modern Optimization Modelling Techniques

The theory of optimization, understood in a broad sense, is the basis of modern applied mathematics, covering a large spectrum of topics from theoretical considerations (structure, stability) to applied operational research and engineering applications. The compiled material of this book puts on display this versatility, by exhibiting the three parallel and complementary components of optimization: theory, algorithms, and practical problems. The book contains an expanded version of three series of lectures delivered by the authors at the CRM in July 2009. The first part is a self-contained course on the general moment problem and its relations with semidefinite programming. The second part is dedicated to the problem of determination of Nash equilibria from an algorithmic viewpoint. The last part presents congestion models for traffic networks and develops modern optimization techniques for finding traffic equilibria based on stochastic optimization and game theory.

The Roman army represented an important social and organizational reference model for the Romano-Barbarian societies, which progressively replaced the Western Empire in the transition from Late Antiquity to Early Middle Ages. The great flexibility of the decision-making and organizational solutions used by the Roman army allowed the ‘new lords’ to readapt them and thus maintain power in early medieval Europe for a long time. From a perspective ranging from political, social and economic history to law, anthropology, and linguistic, this book demonstrates how interesting and fruitful the investigation of this specific cultural imprint can be in order to gain a better understanding of the origins of the civilization that arouse after the fall of the Roman world. Contributors are Francesco Borri, Fabio Botta, Francesco Castagnino, Stefan Esders, Carla Falluomin, Stefano Gasparri, Wolfgang Haubrichs, Soazick Kerneis, Luca Loschiavo, Valerio Marotta, Esperanza Osaba, Walter Pohl, Jean-Pierre Poly, Pierfrancesco Porena, Iolanda Ruggiero, Andrea Trisciuoglio, Andrea A. Verardi, and Ian Wood.

Transatlantic Jurisdictional Conflicts in Data Protection Law

  • Categories: Law

This book looks at transatlantic jurisdictional conflicts in data protection law and how the fundamental right to data protection conditions the EU's exercise of extraterritorial jurisdiction. Governments, companies and individuals are handling ever more digitised personal data, so it is increasingly important to ensure this data is protected. Meanwhile, the Internet is changing how territory and jurisdiction are realised online. The EU promotes personal data protection as a fundamental right. Especially since the EU's General Data Protection Regulation started applying in 2018, its data protection laws have had strong effects beyond its territory. In contrast, similar US information privacy laws are rooted in the marketplace and carry less normative heft. This has provoked clashes with the EU when their values, interests and laws conflict. This research uses three case studies to suggest ways to mitigate transatlantic jurisdictional tensions over data protection and security, the free flow of information and trade.

MEDICON’23 and CMBEBIH’23

This book presents cutting-edge research and developments in the broad field of medical, biological engineering and computing. It gathers the second volume of the joint proceedings of the Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing (MEDICON) and the International Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering (CMBEBIH), which were held together on September 14-16, 2023, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Contributions report on innovative research and practices in molecular biology, tissue engineering and biotechnologies, covering not only medical but also industrial applications. Further, they describe advances in health technologies and medical devices, telemedicine, and robotic applications in clinical medicine and rehabilitation.
