Language Attitudes in a Multilingual and Multicultural Context
Considerant, d'una banda, la comprovada importància que adopten les actituds lingüístiques en l'adquisició de les llengües i, de l'altra, que esdevenen potenciadores de la integració social en contextos plurilingües, com és el cas de Catalunya, s'han analitzat les actituds vers el català, castellà i anglès d'un total de 1173 estudiants migrats i autòctons que cursen Educació Secundària Obligatòria a Catalunya. Paral·lelament, s'ha realitzat una anàlisi longitudinal amb 72 escolars migrats. En general, els efectes de les variables examinades varien entre llengües, essent els factors més influents l'origen, les auto-identificacions i els usos lingüístics. D'altra banda, l'alumnat migrat millora lleugerament les seves actituds vers el català en dos anys, mentre que vers l'espanyol i l'anglès es mantenen estables. Aquests resultats ressalten la importància de tenir en compte les particularitats de cada col·lectiu en l'aplicació de mesures socials i educatives.
Revisiting Centres and Peripheries in Iberian Studies
Like its predecessor and companion volume New Journeys in Iberian Studies, this volume gathers fresh and emerging research in a range of sub-fields of Iberian studies from an international range of established academics and early career researchers. The book provides rich evidence of the breadth and depth of new research being carried out in the dynamic field of Iberian studies at present. As the title suggests, a strong thread running through the collection is concerned with investigating the multiple spaces of tension between the centre and periphery that comprise the Iberian cultural system. Topically, the current situation in Catalonia naturally comes to the fore in a number of chapters and from a range of perspectives. However, in the revisiting of a range of cultural products and historical processes undertaken by the contributors, it can be seen that transoceanic postcolonial relations are not neglected and concerns with history, memory and fiction also weave their way through their work.
Language
As speakers of different languages interact, language contact will occur. Language contact will necessarily lead to language change for both parties involved in such contact. As languages change, the issue of competence becomes problematic. Who has the right to say what language will be taught in schools, or what kind of language will be published in the press and spoken in the media in a world where languages constantly change? The articles in this collection refer to several language areas in Europe, from the North (Scandinavia), the South (Spain / Balkan), the East (Ukraine / Russia), as well as the Center (Austria / Germany) and includes one contribution on Canada. They present different cases of language competence and assessment, languages in contact in different settings, and language changes which are related to applied linguistics, both from a sociolinguistic and an educational linguistic point of view. Chinese as a Second Language Multilinguals’ Speech Competence and Speech Performance
This book offers a comprehensive and systematic review of multilingual L2 learners’ spoken Chinese, focusing on the dual dimensions of speech competence and speech performance. Specifically, by adopting a mixed-methods approach, it explores the cognitive, affective, and socio-cultural differences between intermediate and advanced multilingual learners’ L2 Chinese speech competence and speech performance. Drawing on a theoretical framework underpinned by the affective filter hypothesis, L2 willingness to communicate model, L2 motivational self-system, and L2 speech production models, this book not only contributes to our theoretical understanding of the roles of various factors in L2 Chinese speech competence and speech performance, but also offers practical insights into the implications for both teachers and learners in terms of how to minimize the gap between these two dimensions among L2 Chinese learners. It concludes with a discussion on the limitations of L2 Chinese speech and on future directions for the field.
Multilingualism in European Language Education
This book explores how different European education systems manage multilingualism. Each chapter focuses on one of ten diverse settings (Andorra, Asturias, the Basque Country, Catalonia, England, Finland, France, Latvia, the Netherlands and Romania) and considers how its education system is influenced by historical, sociolinguistic and legislative and political processes and how languages are handled within the system, stressing the challenges and opportunities in each area of study. Attitudes and Language
