The Achillean Hero in the Plays of Tirso de Molina
Tirso de Molina has been the subject of less than half as much scholarly research as either of his Golden Age counterparts, Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca. Tirso's only mythological play, El Aquiles, remains one of the least studied of his plays, and when studied, is generally considered in isolation from the rest of his dramatic production. The Achillean Hero in the Plays of Tirso de Molina traces the development of the figure of the Achillean hero in three of Tirso's plays, El Aquiles, La vida y muerte de Herodes, and La venganza de Tamar, and in doing so connects the early mythological play to the dramatist's later works.
Wisdom of Eccentric Old Men
The wise fool, the sensible madman, and the village idiot, traditional characters in European literature, are best-known through Don Quixote. Galdós, Spain's most important novelist after Cervantes, contributed to this corpus with a number of principal characters whose affinity to Cervantes's hero is clearly recognizable. Bly demonstrates that a number of Galdós's secondary characters - the eccentric old men who appear with regular frequency in the realist social novels of his most important period of writing, 1876 to1897 - can be classified as a variant or sub-group of this type.
The Production of Knowledge of Normativity in the Age of the Printing Press
This volume explores the production of knowledge of normativity in the age of early modern globalisation by looking at an extraordinarily pragmatic and normative book: Manual de Confessores, by the Spanish canon law professor Martín de Azpilcueta (1492-1586). Intertwining expertise, methods, and questions of legal history and book history, this book follows the actors and analyses the factors involved in the production, circulation, and use of the Manual, both in printed and manuscript forms, in the territories of the early modern Iberian Empires and of the Catholic Church. It convincingly illustrates the different dynamics related to the materiality of this object that contributed to “glocal” knowledge production.
