This wide-ranging collection brings together essays on a recent approach to translation known as transcreation. Together with new modes of translation, such as fansubbing, fandubbing, and crowdsourcing, transcreation has challenged the traditional structure of the translation market, the agency and ethics of the discipline, and encouraged new research in translation studies. A debate has emerged around the two concepts of translation and transcreation, mostly in terms of differences between the two practices and issues such as creativity, abusive translation and appropriation. Mainly applied to commercial translation, transcreation is now gaining momentum among translation scholars in broader areas of application, going beyond the early focus of promotional and advertising products where it was initially practised. In the specific context of this volume, transcreation is discussed in relation to a variety of textual and visual genres that range from poetry, prose, theatre, film and television to tourism and highly specialised legal texts.

Translation and Contemporary Art
This book looks to expand the definition of translation in line with Susan Bassnett and David Johnston’s notion of the “outward turn”, applying this perspective to contemporary art to broaden the scope of how we understand translation in today’s global multisemiotic world. The book takes as its point of departure the idea that texts are comprised of not only words but other semiotic systems and therefore expanding our notions of both language and translation can better equip us to translate stories told via non-traditional means in novel ways. While the “outward turn” has been analyzed in literature, Vidal directs this spotlight to contemporary art, a field which has already engaged in disciplinary connections with Translation Studies. The volume highlights how the unpacking of such connections between disciplines encourages engagement with contemporary social issues, around identity, power, migration, and globalization, and in turn, new ways of thinking and bringing about wider cultural change. The COVID-19 Pandemic in Asia and Africa
The present publication has been conceived as a critical reflection, in different disciplinary fields, on the social, institutional, and cultural impact of the recent COVID-19 pandemic in Asia and Africa. The issues presented here were first discussed as part of a larger research project at two conferences, held in Rome in June and October 2022. After extensive revision, these results have now been collected as fully developed articles in the current two volumes: the first focuses on the cultural, artistic, and media-related facets of the pandemic; the second on its social and institutional implications. This Volume I examines the effects of the traumatic events brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic on various cultural phenomena, artistic expressions, and social media communication, analysing among other themes the creation of new narratives and the modalities of personal and collective responses. The articles cover vast geographical areas, spanning from the Middle East to the Indian Subcontinent and East Asia, and aim at making their multiple visions converge in one compact perspective of empathic connection.
