V pořadí čtvrtý sborník příspěvků mezinárodní konference doktorandské konference s názvem "Obsah–Forma" a podtitulem citujícím slova Jana Patočky "...obsah sám si vytváří a požaduje formu, vnitřek si tvoří svůj vnějšek, umělecká myšlenka si dává přímo své vtělení" opět přináší celou řadu poutavých příspěvků doktorandů z českých fakult i zahraničí z mnoha humanitních oborů (dějin umění, teologie, historie, literatury, hudby nebo divadelní vědy) napříč obdobími.

'Church' at the Time of the Reformation

The present volume aims at a clarification and a discussion of the church in the 16th century: What did the reformers think about the essence and origin of the holy, apostolic and Catholic church? What was seen as the aim of it, its task and mission? Can human beings see the true church or not? Does it have one existence in this world and another in the world to come? Furthermore, the concept of church is indissolubly connected to the theological concepts of sin, faith, justification, sanctification, and salvation, and the study of the church also involves reflection upon the nature and scope of the sacraments, the role of the clergy, the aim of church-buildings, the significance of church p...

Collecting and Museology

  • Categories: Art

To celebrate the first ten years of the international forum Collecting and Display, as well as the launch of a dedicated series of publications “Collecting Histories”, in 2014, a conference dedicated to new directions in terms of collecting, display, visitor experience and the use of modern media in today’s museums was held at museums of the city of Memmingen in Bavaria. Speakers looked into whether and how the engagement with the history of collections, in their diverse permutations, has influenced and modified modern museology. This volume looks forward towards a future which oftentimes looks bleak due to funding cuts, lack of appreciation of cultural history and a sometimes dubious ...

Byzantine Media Subjects

  • Categories: Art

Byzantine Media Subjects invites readers into a world replete with images—icons, frescoes, and mosaics filling places of worship, politics, and community. Glenn Peers asks readers to think themselves into a world where representation reigned and humans followed, and indeed were formed. Interrogating the fundamental role of representation in the making of the Byzantine human, Peers argues that Byzantine culture was (already) posthuman. The Byzantine experience reveals the extent to which media like icons, manuscripts, music, animals, and mirrors fundamentally determine humans. In the Byzantine world, representation as such was deeply persuasive, even coercive; it had the power to affect human relationships, produce conflict, and form self-perception. Media studies has made its subject the modern world, but this book argues for media having made historical subjects. Here, it is shown that media long ago also made Byzantine humans, defining them, molding them, mediating their relationship to time, to nature, to God, and to themselves.

Architectural Actions on the Religious Heritage after Vatican II

This book serves to shed some light on several controversial questions about contemporary interventions on religious heritage buildings. In the mid-1960s, a process of renewal of Catholic churches began, which sought to respond to the liturgical modifications implemented during the Vatican II (1962-65). Fifty years later, this process continues to be problematic in buildings with a high heritage or historical value. From an operational point of view, it is stimulating to revisit the most relevant architectures at the international level, those high-impact works that were generated thanks to an open and serene dialogue between principals, architects, users, artists and patrimonial leaders. Thus, it is essential to know the criteria that have supported interventions, whether legal (both ecclesiastical and civil), architectural, artistic, liturgical or pastoral. In this sense, what references could be used at a time like ours? How can we reform what has already been reformed?

Jesuit Art and Czech Lands, 1556–1729

This collection examines how the Society of Jesus used art and architecture in its missionary efforts in the Lands of the Bohemian Crown from the sixteenth century to the eighteenth. The Jesuits used a variety of visual media to re-invigorate the cult of miraculous images, saints, and local Catholic customs in the Central European region, where a tradition of religious dissent went back to the legendary Hussites of the 15th century. Jesuit art is seen as resulting from the transfer, local adaptation, and visualization of ideas about image theology, the order's global mission, its self-promotion, and the construction of the religious past. Examining the architecture, statues, images, murals, and decorative programs of Jesuit complexes and other visual media (devotional prints, medieval images), the essays here demonstrate how the Jesuit Order cultivated the subjects and functions of art to promote concepts of Catholic piety as they grew into one of the most successful agents of Catholic Reform in the Bohemian kingdom.

Neklidné století

Historik Jaroslav Čechura se dlouhodobě věnuje každodennímu životu na jihočeském venkově, v předkládané monografii se zaměřuje na období třicetileté války. Turbulentní události z všednodennosti sedláků a selek na gruntech třeboňského panství popisuje autor díky práci s několikerým typem pramenů, pozemkovými a jiterními knihami, poddanskými soupisy, matrikami, populačními seznamy, výhosty, urbáři, egodokumenty či robotními seznamy. Pečlivá heuristika mu dovoluje nejen představit osudy konkrétních aktérů, ale zároveň vyvodit z jejich jednání obecnější vzorce chování tehdejších poddaných i správy panství.
