Exiles cross borders, become non-mainstream individuals and break through barriers of thought and experience. Forced or chosen detachment can lead to originality of vision, awareness of simultaneous dimensions - in short a writing that challenges boundaries of genre, monolingualism and national literatures. The writers of the Balkan (Slavic) diaspora offer narratives of critical reflection, strange fusions and unions, representative of the new cultural identities of contemporary Europe. This volume presents an interesting combination of original writer's essays (by Tzveta Sofronieva, Goran Stefanovski, Dubravka Ugresic) and academic discussions on the function of such narratives, seeking answers to a number of academic questions, related to the construction of the Self in processes of cultural translation/transmission.

The volume offers an overview of the diverse Jewish experiences in Southeastern Europe from the 19th to the 21st centuries, and the various forms and strategies of their representation in literature, the arts, historiography and philosophy. Southeastern Europe is characterized by a high degree of ethnical, religious and cultural diversity. Jews, whether Sephardim, Ashkenazim or Romaniots – settling there in different periods – experienced divergent life worlds which engendered rich cultural production. Though recent scholarly and popular interest in this heterogeneous region has grown impressively, Jewish cultural production is still an under-researched area. The volume offers an overview of the diverse Jewish experiences in Southeastern Europe from the 19th to the 21st centuries, and the various forms and strategies of their representation in literature, the arts, historiography and philosophy, thus creating a dialogue between Jewish studies, Balkan studies, and current literary and cultural theories.

Part cookbook—with more than 120 enticing recipes—part culinary history, part inquiry into the evolution of an industry, Milk is a one-of-a-kind book that will forever change the way we think about dairy products. Anne Mendelson, author of Stand Facing the Stove, first explores the earliest Old World homes of yogurt and kindred fermented products made primarily from sheep’s and goats’ milk and soured as a natural consequence of climate. Out of this ancient heritage from lands that include Greece, Bosnia, Turkey, Israel, Persia, Afghanistan, and India, she mines a rich source of culinary traditions. Mendelson then takes us on a journey through the lands that traditionally only consume...
