Language Use, Usage Guides and Linguistic Norms
This volume offers a collection of twelve original papers on language use and attitudes towards language from both a historical and a present-day perspective. The first part of the book focuses on the general theme of language use and on attitudes towards language use in both the past and the present. The second part concentrates on actual language use in personal and public letters from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. The third part is mainly concerned with the possible impact of usage guides, and also addresses the problem of language and cultural misunderstanding and the apparent need for usage guides for cultural allusions. Language Use, Usage Guides and Linguistic Norms will be of interest to scholars of language use in both the past and the present, as well as to anyone interested in the interplay between actual language use and prescriptive attitudes towards language.
Germanic Language Histories 'from Below' (1700-2000)
Focusing on the sociolinguistic history of Germanic languages, the current volume challenges the traditional teleological approach of language historiography. The 30 contributions present alternative histories of ten ‘big’ as well as ‘small’ Germanic languages and varieties in the last 300 years. Topics covered in this book include language variation and change and the politics of language contact and choice, seen against the background of standardization processes of written and oral text genres and from the viewpoint of larger sections of the population.

Mass Theatre in Interwar Europe
Ideological heterogeneity in mass plays in Flanders and the Netherlands In many European countries mass theatre was a widespread expression of ‘community art’ which became increasingly popular shortly before the First World War. From Max Reinhardt’s lavish open-air spectacles to socialist workers’ Laienspiel (lay theatre), theatre visionaries focused on ever larger groups for entertainment as well as political agitation. Despite wide research on the Soviet and German cases, examples from the Low Countries have hardly been examined. However, mass plays in Flanders and the Netherlands had a distinctive character, displaying an ideological heterogeneity not seen elsewhere. Mass Theatre in Interwar Europe studies this peculiar phenomenon of the Low Countries in its European context and sheds light on the broader framework of mass movements in the interwar period.

Über einen geschlechtergerechten Sprachgebrauch wird in Deutschland nun schon seit über 40 Jahren diskutiert. In Folge der Verbreitung gegenderter Formen (Wählende) und grascher Sonderzeichen (Dozent*in) ist der Ton der Debatte deutlich rauer geworden; die beiden ,Lager' stehen sich inzwischen nahezu unversöhnlich gegenüber und reden nicht selten aneinander vorbei. Dieser Sammelband vereint Beiträge zu elf europäischen Sprachen, in denen sprachgeschichtliche Aspekte und die gegenwärtige Debatte so wertneutral wie möglich und unter Vermeidung von Polemik behandelt werden.
