Esta obra, organizada pelo Kairós - Grupo de Estudos e Pesquisas sobre Trabalho, Educação e Políticas Públicas/UFSM, apresenta uma série de textos sobre o Curso Normal, tendo por referência o contexto sul-rio-grandense. Objetivou-se não somente registrar a historicidade, por meio de pesquisas realizadas, mas inserir-se na luta pela manutenção e validação do Curso Normal como curso técnico para o Magistério. As pesquisas também comprovam a importância do Curso na condição de matriz do trabalho pedagógico realizado no início da Educação Básica, durante séculos no Brasil. Somente com a LDB 9394/96, há a exigência de licenciatura para os professores da Educação Infantil e Anos Iniciais do Ensino Fundamental. Na expectativa de que a pesquisa seja auxiliar na continuidade de estudos sobre o Curso Normal e sobre o trabalho pedagógico dos professores, enfatiza-se a necessidade de manutenção do Curso e sua releitura em acordo com os tempos educacionais que se vive.
