Surgical Recovery

Recovering from surgery is greatly dependent upon the type of surgery you will be having. Enhanced recovery pathways include preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative practices that decrease complications and accelerate recovery. How long it takes you to fully recover from your surgery will depend on many things, including: • your age • your health before the surgery • the extent of your injuries • the success of your rehabilitation • the amount of rest you get. It may take a few days or a week to recover from a less complex operation, but it can take a few months to recover from major surgery. The American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status (ASA-PS) classification ...

The Polish Climate in the European Context: An Historical Overview

Reconstruction of the climate variability of the past 500 years is a topic of great scientific interest not only in global terms, but also at regional and local levels. This period is interesting on account of the increasing influence of anthropogenic forcing and its overlap with natural factors. The Polish Climate in the European Context: An Historical Overview summarises the results of research into climate variability based on a combination of instrumental, documentary, dendrochronological and borehole data from Poland. The first part of the book provides a Central European perspective of research in these fields, which forms the general background for a presentation of the state of the a...

Patients with hematological malignancies and recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) as well as solid organ transplant recipients are the groups of patients with the highest risk of invasive fungal infections (IFI). Neutropenia, lymphopenia, chemotherapy of malignancies, radiation therapy, immunosuppressive therapy, administration of glucocorticosteroids, use of central venous catheters, dialysis therapy, liver and kidney failure, and diabetes are diseases and medical conditions which foster invasive fungal infections. In recent years, it has been observed that the most common etiological agents of these infections are yeast-like fungi of the genus Candid...

Half the world's children live in cities and the proportion is growing. Their environment critically determines their futures and the world they will make as adults. This text, by an interdisciplinary team of international child-environment authorities, explores how crucial the relationship of the young and their surroundings is. Covering eight countries, it shows the enormous benefits - for them, for the wider society and for the future - of involving children, especially from underprivileged communities, in planning and implementing urban improvements. It continues and updates Kevin Leech's pioneering 1970s MIT project, Growing Up in Cities.

More than half of all children in industrialised countries live in urban areas, and the same will be true in the developing world in the near future. Yet, by almost all indicators, cities are failing to meet the needs of young people, prejudicing their chances as adults. Written by a team of experts from the fields of urban planning, architecture, geography, anthropology, psychology and environmental education, this book analyses the results of a UNESCO project which looks at the effects on young people of their urban surroundings, based on case studies from eight countries (including Australia, India, South Africa, the UK and the USA). This study places a new emphasis on the active participation of young people in the planning, design and implementation of urban improvements, and recommends policies and practices that will make cities more responsive to the needs of children, adolescents and their families.

"The questions posed to the Solidarity leaders are searching, incisive, designed to elicit as much information as possible, and the answers, in turn, are strikingly candid and illuminating. . . . The book is lively, colorful, and extremely readable."--Abraham Brumberg, Georgetown University "All the leaders interviewed represent the very top of Solidarity hierarchy while also coming from very different backgrounds . . . therefore their insights are invaluable. Their opinions strike the reader with their openness and sincerity. . . . Out of those interviews a complex, vivid, and sometimes sharply self-critical picture of Polish 'underground society' emerges."--Stanislaw Baranczak, Harvard University "The questions posed to the Solidarity leaders are searching, incisive, designed to elicit as much information as possible, and the answers, in turn, are strikingly candid and illuminating. . . . The book is lively, colorful, and extremely readable."--Abraham Brumberg, Georgetown University
