With contributions by numerous experts
This book provides a comprehensive overview of inflammatory brain diseases from a neuroradiological point of view, encompassing both infectious (e.g., viral encephalitis and pyogenic brain abscess) and non-infectious (e.g., multiple sclerosis) diseases. Neuroimaging contributes greatly to the differentiation of infectious and noninfectious brain diseases and to the distinction between brain inflammation and other diseases. In order to ensure a standardized approach throughout the book, each chapter is subdivided into three principal sections: epidemiology, clinical presentation and therapy; imaging; and differential diagnosis. A separate chapter addresses technical and methodological issues and imaging protocols. All of the authors are recognized experts in their fields, and numerous high-quality and informative illustrations are included. This book will be of great value not only to neuroradiologists but also to neurologists, neuropediatricians, and general radiologists.
This chapter summarizes progress in the evaluation of peripheral nerve (PN) lesions and disorders by imaging techniques encompassing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and nerve ultrasound (US). Due to the radiation exposure and limited sensitivity in soft tissue contrast, computed-tomography (CT) plays no significant role in the diagnostic work-up of PN disorders. MRI and US are complementary techniques for the evaluation of peripheral nerves, each having particular advantages and disadvantages. Nerve injury induces intrinsic MRI signal alterations on T2-weighted sequences in degenerating or demyelinating nerve segments as well as in corresponding muscle groups exhibiting denervation which ca...
Part of the Monographs in Cardiac Surgery Series – Introducing ‘basic science into the cardiac operating room’. Fast systematic review of small areas of cardiac surgery including up-to-date information. This will allow more rapid publication than the alternative cardiac surgery ‘tomes’. This entry into the series will provide readers with a complete review of the current understanding in brain injury and the methods used to avoid or limit its effects on patient morbidity and mortality.
- Volume is divided into four sections, allowing easy navagation for researchers and practicing physicians - Text includes clinical trials - Written by leaders in the field
This book provides extensive data on the more common and many of the more rare congenital and hereditary syndromes that manifest in the nervous system and skin. Though often complex and multi-systemic, these disorders can frequently be diagnosed using a combination of simple visual inspection and sound clinical expertise. Drawing on fully referenced information from thousands of articles, the international editorial team has prepared a comprehensive overview that includes historical perspectives, clinical features, the pathogenesis, and diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. In addition, it addresses the biochemical, molecular, and genetic basis of the disorders. The book is divided into fou...
100% pure MR imaging of the CNS...comprehensive, up to date, essential The imaging quality achievable in MR imaging today was inconceivable just a few years ago. No other subdiscipline has evolved so swiftly while placing ever-greater emphasis on fast and accurate results. This book is intended as an indispensable tool at the workplace, as reference for image interpretation, and even for fast orientation during the examination. Adjunct information is provided that fosters the dialogue with referring physicians: for most diseases and conditions there are summaries of epidemiology, clinical findings, pathogenesis and pathophysiology, as well as basic therapy concepts. Special features: A fast-...
