The COVID-19 Pandemic and Memory
This book offers a platform for the analysis of commemorative and archiving practices as they were shaped, expanded, and developed during the Covid-19 lockdown periods in 2020 and the years that followed. By offering an extensive global view of these changes as well as of the continuities that went with them, the book enters a dialogue with what has emerged as an initial response to the pandemic and the ways in which it has affected memory and commemoration. The book aims to critically and empirically engage with this abundance of memory to understand both memorialization of the pandemic and commemoration during the pandemic: what happened then to commemorative practices and rituals around the world? How has the Covid-19 pandemic been archived and remembered? What will remembering it actually entail, and what will it mean in the future? Where did the Covid memory boom come from? Who was behind it, how did it emerge, and in what social configurations did it evolve?

Bloodshed by King Manasseh, Assyrians and Priestly Scribes
King Manasseh of Judah is one of the most intriguing characters in the Bible. 2 Kings presents him as the wickedest of monarchs. In 2Kgs 24:3–4, he is accused of having provoked God to destroy Judah on account of the innocent blood he had shed in Jerusalem (cf. 2Kgs 21:16). In his study Krzysztof Kinowski investigates this accusation, viewing it against the biblical and ancient Near East backgrounds, and casts a new light upon Manasseh's role in the fall of Jerusalem. The mention of bloodshed in this affair appears to be the outcome of a process of scapegoating of Manasseh, ongoing in 2 Kings and reflecting both the legal and the cultic paradigms governing the biblical historiography. The link between Manasseh's bloodshed and the destruction of Judah on account of the cultic land's blood-defilement points towards a group of priestly scribes involved in the production of the 2Kgs 21 and 24 narratives. This assumption lies behind the scholarly discussion about the Priestly-like strata and priestly touches in the Books of Kings.
Turkey, Greece, and the "Borders" of Europe
The Republic of Turkey has long aspired to join Europe both politically and culturally. However, its attempts to do so have been met with scepticism, and there is no unequivocal answer to the question of whether or not Turkey is accepted and viewed as European. This question is of particular interest in the case of Germany, the engine of the European Union’s economy which is not only home to millions of Turkish immigrants, but also has a history of cooperation with Turkey unique among European countries. With its analysis of West German prestige newspapers printed between 1950 and 1975, this study looks into how Germans viewed Turkey from a cultural and political perspective during a critical period of Turkish integration with the West and Europe, and compares this with perceptions of Greece, whose path to Europe was far less problematic by virtue of its classical legacy and Christian heritage.
