Adventure, Mystery, and Romance

In this first general theory for the analysis of popular literary formulas, John G. Cawelti reveals the artistry that underlies the best in formulaic literature. Cawelti discusses such seemingly diverse works as Mario Puzo's The Godfather, Dorothy Sayers's The Nine Tailors, and Owen Wister's The Virginian in the light of his hypotheses about the cultural function of formula literature. He describes the most important artistic characteristics of popular formula stories and the differences between this literature and that commonly labeled "high" or "serious" literature. He also defines the archetypal patterns of adventure, mystery, romance, melodrama, and fantasy, and offers a tentative account of their basis in human psychology.

Since 1986 research on infants has raised the question of negative consequences for the social and emotional development of infants placed in day care before age one. This study examines the complex ecology of the day care infant's life through naturalistic observation of three first-born infants in full-time day care (20 hours or more per week) from ages 3 to 12 months. the data, recorded in running narratives derived from one hour visits at home and at day care on alternate weeks, serve as the basis for three case histories of a boy in family day care, a girl in individual out-of-home care, and a girl in center day care. Combined theories from developmental psychology, attachment, and object relations influence the observation, recording, and analysis of the data.

Capital Consequences

Those who support capital punishment often claim that they do so because it provides justice and closure for the victims' families. In Capital Consequences, attorney Rachel King reminds us that there are other families and other victims who must be considered in the debate over the death penalty. Combining a narrative voice with vivid, passionate, and painful accounts of the families of death row inmates, the book demonstrates that crimes that lead to death sentences also devastate the families of those convicted. These families, King argues, are the unseen victims of capital punishment. King challenges readers to question the morality of a punishment that victimizes families of the condemne...
