The purpose of this book is to describe the main formal and functional characteristics of all the syntactic processes of thematization and postponement in English. It describes in detail the main aspects of cleft sentences, reversed-pseudo cleft sentences, topicalization, inversion, left-dislocation, passive, extraposition, existential sentences, pseudo-cleft sentences, postposition and right-dislocation. The main aspects of use will be illustrated with examples from three novels written by the South African writer Alan Paton. The book is divided into three main chapters: the first one is a general introduction which explains some general concepts related to word order, to the corpus of examples and to Alan Paton, the author of the novels chosen as a corpus of examples; the second chapter is devoted to the syntactic processes of thematization in English and the third one to the syntactic processes of postponement.

Multiple Voices in Academic and Professional Discourse

The demands of today’s society for greater specialization have brought about a profound transformation in the humanities, which are not immune to the competitive pressure to meet new challenges that are present in other sectors. Thus, lecturers and researchers in modern languages and applied linguistics departments have made great efforts to design syllabi and materials more attuned to the competences and requirements of potential working environments. At the same time, linguists have attempted to apply their expertise in wider areas, creating research institutes that focus on applying language and linguistics in different contexts and offering linguistic services to society as a whole. The 2012 TESOL-SPAIN Convention held at the University of Deusto produced a number of relevant papers and presentations compiled in this book. The different papers deal with issues of concern for those teaching both English and in English, and show the progress made in this field to date. The authors are both national and international and their works tackle aspects such as motivation, new methodologies, new testing proce-dures and so forth.

An Autoethnographic Approach to Identity and Second Language

Using autoethnographic and narrative inquiry, this book investigates the identity and literacy development of an international graduate student in the United States of America. The findings illustrate that the identities and literacy practices in graduate school were multiple, heterogeneous, dialogic, situated, and dynamic. The findings indicate that the development of both identities and literacy practices in graduate school require a considerable amount of interaction with others – through both people and texts - and that these interactions are the primary factor underlying disciplinary socialization. This enquiry formulates subjective evaluations about these interactions and how they fundamentally shape academic socialization. The study also underlines the significance and necessity of studying academic socialization from particular emic perspectives of individuals.

Discourses on Immigration in Times of Economic Crisis

The press is generally regarded as a reliable source of information, albeit with the capacity to propagate ideologies, social conceptions and beliefs. In this regard, it seems evident that the social role of the press can by no means be underestimated: it can influence our knowledge, values and social codes through linguistic and other semiotic means, sometimes hidden under a euphemistic lexical disguise holding up a liberal and apparently respectful discourse. Discourses on Immigration in Times of Economic Crisis examines the discursive and visual elements that are involved in reproducing ethnic and racial prejudices in contemporary press discourse. Our present reality is characterised by a moment of economic crisis, and it is a contention of the book that this affects the treatment of immigration, particularly in the press, which tends to refer to immigrants as a people-problem of some description or another. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to describe major aspects of discourse related to immigration within the present social context of the economic crisis.

African American Women's Literature in Spain

African American Women's Literature in Spain

This volume brings forward a descriptive approach to the translation and reception of African American women’s literature in Spain. Drawing from a multidisciplinary theoretical and methodological framework, it traces the translation history of literature produced by African American women, seeking to uncover changing strategies in translation policies as well as shifts in interests in the target context, and it examines the topicality of this cohort of authors as frames of reference for Spanish critics and reviewers. Likewise, the reception of the source literature in the Spanish context is described by reconstructing the values that underlie judgements in different reception sources. Finally, this book addresses the specific problem of the translation of Black English into Spanish. More precisely, it pays attention to the ideological and the ethical implications of translation choices and the effect of the latter on the reception of literary texts.
