At the First Table

Research on European food culture has expanded substantially in recent years, telling us more about food preparation, ingredients, feasting and fasting rituals, and the social and cultural connotations of food. At the First Table demonstrates the ways in which early modern Spaniards used food as a mechanism for the performance of social identity. People perceived themselves and others as belonging to clearly defined categories of gender, status, age, occupation, and religion, and each of these categories carried certain assumptions about proper behavior and appropriate relationships with others. Food choices and dining customs were effective and visible ways of displaying these behaviors in ...

"Lazy, Improvident People"

Since the early modern era, historians and observers of Spain, both within the country and beyond it, have identified a peculiarly Spanish disdain for work, especially manual labor, and have seen it as a primary explanation for that nation's alleged failure to develop like the rest of Europe. In "Lazy, Improvident People," the historian Ruth MacKay examines the origins of this deeply ingrained historical prejudice and cultural stereotype. Proportionality Manifesto

Proportionality Manifesto

This Proportionalist Manifesto is a PROPOSAL for a new way of life beyond both capitalism and socialism. The existing political and economic systems no longer respond to postmodern, global and environmental needs of human and other beings. Proportionalism is based on the trialectics/triadicity existing in nature, in quarks "triplets", in quantum physics, in religions, and in systems theory. Its proposal aims at human dignity with guarantees of a minimum income threshold and a maximum limit of destructive wealth accumulation, for the sake of peace and good life for all with mutual co-responsibility.
