Drawing on political discourse from a wide rage of settings and perspectives, this book is set to provide a descriptive and analytical tool for examining political discourse and will be welcomed by anyone interested in discourse analysis in general, and in political discourse in particular. Topics covered in this book include the study of political discourse styles, the use of rhetorical strategies (vocabulary, metaphors, quotations, parentheticals, etc.), the relation between political discourse and society (legitimization, the private-public interface, identities), role of gestures in relation to speech, methods for analysing political discourse, and how to build and exploit a political language corpus.
Text and Wine: Approaches from terminology and translation collects part of the results of the research project WeinApp: Multilingual System of Information and Winegrowing-Resources (MINECO, Ref. FFI2016-79785-R), carried out by researchers from the universities of Cordoba and Cadiz (Spain), on wine production, the wine sector, and its language and terminology in English, French, German and Spanish. The editors, principal investigators of the project, begin the volume, which contains works on phytopathology, lexical domains and subdomains, wine tourism, agro-legal texts, Indo-European languages, labelling, tasting metaphors, wine and literature, interpretation, wine and medicine, oenological websites, and lexical and morphosyntactic formation around the language of wine.
This book is a companion to Political Debasement: Incivility, Contempt, and Humiliation in Parliamentary and Public Discourse. Is male ‘supremachism’ really over? The pages you are holding in your hands sow doubts on the common belief that the governance of ‘the macho’ came to its end. As the proverb confirms, ‘the old dies hard’, despite the yet-to-improve individual and institutional efforts to achieve gender equality. With the serious tone this capital issue requires, the author debunks the myth of male supremacism as a phenomenon from a past and raises awareness of the subliminal survival of the supremachist ideological apparatus. Subtlety reveals as a key factor for the survival of subliminal supremachist campaigns, which threatens a promising future of non-discrimination. Essentially, democratic citizenship must pose itself a crucial question: Are current Western societies’ concessions to feminism genuine or a cover by supremachism to survive in an ideologically volatile world?
The agri-food sector encompasses an extremely wide range of activities regarding the entire value chain of a product and generates a huge volume of work for translators. Nevertheless, the sheer proportion has yet to be truly reflected in academic studies and research. This work intends to shed light on the vague, and barely addressed until now, delimitation of the area of activity of the multifaceted and versatile agri-food translator. Through a text typologisation of genres and subgenres, within the margins of hybridity, specialisation and register, this work approaches the characteristics of scientific-technical, medical-health, legal-administrative, humanistic-literary, tourist, advertising and gastronomic and culinary agri-food texts, and assesses the skills required from their translator.
Translators’ contribution to the vitality of textual production in the Renaissance is still often vastly underestimated. Drawing on a wide variety of sources published in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Latin, German, English, and Zapotec, this volume brings a global perspective to the history of translators, and the printed book. Together the essays point out the extent to which particular language cultures were liable to shift, overlap, shrink, and expand during one of the most defining periods in the history of print culture. Interdisciplinary in approach, Trust and Proof investigates translators’ role in the diffusion of discourse about languages and ancient knowledge, as well as changing etiquettes of reading and writing.
