In July 1950, a young Dutch intersex woman was expelled from elite competition by the International Amateur Athletic Federation. It turned out to be the beginning of a dark era in the history of women in sport. Young women were subjected to humiliating examinations and dozens of intersex athletes were suspended, although no fraud was ever uncovered. This book presents a compelling argument against gender verification, showing the pernicious effects that suspension inflicted on the lives of young athletes. Some withdrew from the public eye, lived in solitude, or even committed suicide. Compassionate profiles of these banned athletes highlight the unfair play of gender verification and of their exclusion from competition.

Creative Collaboration in Art Practice, Research, and Pedagogy

  • Categories: Art

This collection reflects current and nuanced discussions of the ways collaboration and participation meaningfully inform the production, study, and teaching of art with innovative and unexpected results. It illustrates how the shifting boundaries of power, position, and identity, between domains of knowledge and collaborative participants, result in new relationships. The chapters in this book share stories applicable or relevant to readers’ own classrooms, art practice, or scholarship. As such, it directly appeals to college professors of studio art and design, art history, and art education, as well as to artists, scholars, and teachers who work collaboratively. It may also draw readership from business professionals seeking critical thinkers and creative problem solvers to energize their industries. The volume will inspire conversations about the ways relationships become crucial for construction, reception and display; meaning and power; design, content, and action.

An examination of the many complex aspects of game audio, from the perspectives of both sound design and music composition. A distinguishing feature of video games is their interactivity, and sound plays an important role in this: a player's actions can trigger dialogue, sound effects, ambient sound, and music. And yet game sound has been neglected in the growing literature on game studies. This book fills that gap, introducing readers to the many complex aspects of game audio, from its development in early games to theoretical discussions of immersion and realism. In Game Sound, Karen Collins draws on a range of sources—including composers, sound designers, voice-over actors and other ind...

The Vote Collectors, Second Edition

In November 2018, Baptist preacher Mark Harris beat the odds, narrowly fending off a blue wave in the sprawling Ninth District of North Carolina. But word soon got around that something fishy was going on in rural Bladen County. At the center of the mess was a local political operative named McCrae Dowless. Dowless had learned the ins and outs of the absentee ballot system from Democrats before switching over to the Republican Party. Bladen County's vote-collecting cottage industry made national headlines, led to multiple election fraud indictments, toppled North Carolina GOP leadership, and left hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians without congressional representation for nearly a yea...
