Migrants in Disaster Risk Reduction
In today's increasingly globalized and mobile societies, internal and international migrants, refugees and asylum seekers represent a significant share of the population of cities and countries. This publication presents experiences from researchers and practitioners from a variety of geographical contexts on how they have been included and have participated in disaster prevention, preparedness, response and recovery activities. It aims to highlight the importance and benefits of, as well as options for, integrating migrants into decision-making, policy-setting and implementation of disaster risk reduction initiatives. This publication builds upon the knowledge and experiences gathered through the Migrants in Countries in Crisis (MICIC) Initiative, a global state-led process for which IOM has been serving as Secretariat, and the Council of Europe's EUR-OPA programme on "Migrants, asylum seekers and refugees in the context of major risks prevention and management".
Education for Democratic Citizenship
The International Seminar on Education for Democratic Citizenship (EDC) Policies and Regulatory Frameworks, which took place in Strasbourg December 6th and 7th 2002, revolved around three main objectives: to review policies and practices in the EDC field in Europe, to facilitate European co-operation for EDC policy-making and implementation between countries, national and international organisations and practitioners, and to draw up proposals for the future development of education for democratic citizenship.In this report, Karen OShea summarises the keynote addresses of the seminar and the results of the working groups. She also presents her own synthesis and analyses of discussions and conclusions.

Migration is not a state of emergency, but a basic existential experience of humanity. It shapes contemporary societies by challenging established orders, creating transnational spaces beyond national hegemonies, creating new economies, influencing urban and communal ways of life, making inequality and precariousness visible locally and globally. Migration research as a social science does not narrow the focus to 'the migrants', but investigates the conditions for living together and shaping life between ethnicization and pluralization, discrimination and empowerment, division and participation. Zwei Jahre nach der Gründung der Internationalen Hermann-Hesse-Gesellschaft anläßlich des des 125. Geburtstages des Literaturnobelpreisträgers von 1946 im Jahre 2002 erscheint das erste Hermann-Hesse-Jahrbuch. Das neue Jahrbuch will Wege der Annäherung an das Phänomen der weltweiten, in unterschiedlichen Kulturen festzustellenden Faszination am Werk Hermann Hesses (1877–1962) aufzeigen und der Aktualität eines Dichters unserer Zeit nachspüren. Jedes Jahrbuch enthält neben Aufsätzen einen Besprechungsteil, eine Hesse-Bibliographie sowie Mitteilungen aus der Gesellschaft. Die Publikationssprache ist Deutsch.

Normen und Grenzen der Kritik und des Engagements in den politischen Schriften von Heinrich Mann und André Gide zwischen 1923 und 1945
Die Arbeit setzt sich mit den politischen Schriften von zwei Schriftstellern kritisch auseinander, die Stellung zum Kolonialismus, Faschismus und Kommunismus nahmen. Es besteht kein Zweifel, daß André Gide kritische Reiseberichte über den französischen Kolonialismus in Zentralafrika geschrieben hat und daß er und Heinrich Mann zu den profiliertesten antifaschistischen Schriftstellern zählen. Mit Hilfe der hier untersuchten Schriften hat der Autor diese Beurteilung bestätigt. Daß aber beide Schriftsteller in denselben Schriften zugleich ein eurozentrisch motiviertes kolonialistisches und rassistisches Denken an den Tag legten, hat die bisherige Forschung bagatellisiert oder unberücksichtigt gelassen. Der Autor bedient sich einer dialektischen Vorgehensweise, die die Tradition der Begriffe kritisch untersucht, die Mann und Gide den Unrechtsverhältnissen ihrer Zeit normativ und unkritisch entgegensetzten. Die Besonderheit dieser Arbeit besteht darin, daß sie sich nicht darauf beschränkt, die Kritik und das Engagement der politischen Schriftsteller Mann und Gide zu zeigen: sie führt zugleich die Grenzen ihrer Kritik und ihres Engagements vor Augen.
