Trafficking of persons (mostly women and children) for commercial sexual activities and forced labor is one of the fastest growing areas of international crime. The United Nations estimates that 4 million men, women, and children become victims of international trafficking each year. Trafficking & the Global Sex Industry focuses on the international trafficking of women and children for forced labor and prostitution. This remarkable anthology takes a broad geographical and economical perspective while also dealing with the specificities of the socio-political background, poverty, opportunity structure, legal conditions, the role of the state, gender structure, and the organization of the trafficking business. The essays create a link from country to country, demonstrating the worldwide nature of the problem. Expertly written and well researched, this collection gives the reader a clearer understanding of the problem and the actions being taken to combat it. Trafficking & the Global Sex Industry will have a broad market for readers on a national and international level, especially among those interested in political science, women's studies, international relations, and criminology.
This volume explores the multiple and complex relationship between classrooms and literacy through four major themes: community, cognitive consequences, access, and power. Chapters emphasize community dynamics in exploring the relationship between classrooms and literacy. The work focuses on the ways in which literacy is used to establish and maintain community, to the relationship between communities both within and outside of the classroom, to the institutional context, to the community agenda and purpose, and to the needs of the community and individual members.
The author provides an example of the theory and practice of dialogic learning. By mixing educational and social theory with literature, life narratives, and personal accounts, he creatively narrates the practice of dialogic learning in a seemingly utopian reality: a literary circle in which low-literacy adults enjoy reading books by authors like Kafka, Dostoyevsky and Garcia Lorca. the book highlights both theory and practice; it is both expository and narrative; and it refers as much to educational and social science works as to classical literature.
Barry (sociology, Pennsylvania State U.) considers sexual exploitation a political condition and thus the foundation of women's subordination and the base from which discrimination against women is constructed. She argues for the need to integrate the struggle against sexual exploitation in prostitution into broader feminist struggles and to place it, as one of several connected issues, in the forefront of the feminist agenda. Critical Approaches to Shakespeare (1623-2000). Shakespeare for All Time addresses the keys to understanding the significance of the critical reception of Shakespeare from the seventeenth to the end of the twentieth century. It aims to show that the richness of these different modes of reading Shakespeare over time and their productive interactions have been fundamental in the constant resignification of Shakespeare as they have gradually conformed and fed our critical perception and interpretation of his works

This book presents the findings of research projects conducted by CREA (Community of Researchers on Excellence for all), a research community based in Barcelona, showing how social transformation combines scientific excellence with the political and social impact of the research. Analyzing the impact of pursuing social sciences research by providing examples of achievements and opportunities despite barriers and obstacles encountered along the way, it is of interest for a broad spectrum of scholars from the field of social sciences – particularly public sociology – as well as from other sciences such as biology and neuroscience.
