MICHAELS MUSINGS consists of blog entries written by Pastor Michael Kurtz over the course of nearly five and one-half years. Each blog provides a daily reading on a wide variety of topics ranging from social issues to sabbath time, and worship service themes to family experiences. Following each web log are provided suggested scripture readings, a reflection statement to consider, and a prayer to offer, all related to the theme and content of the daily writing.
OVERCOMING ODDS AND OBSTACLES:
“Overcoming Odds and Obstacles,” is a story of a focused and determined high school basketball team, who with the vision and guidance of two coaches completed a phenomenal season. The Central squad, many times considered the underdog, believed in, and bought into, a coach’s vision which would ultimately take them to the 1965 North Carolina State 2A Finals, where they would eventually be crowned state champions.
Crossings
DR. ELAM S. KURTZ WAS A MAN OF GREAT VISION, a man of deep faith, and a man of enormous energy. With these qualities, and more, God formed, fashioned, and refined a person, and a medical doctor, who had a profound and pervasive positive influence upon the many people whom his life touched and whom he served. To his patients he was known as Dr. Kurtz, or Doc. To his friends he was referred to as Elam. His family addressed him as Dad, or, in later years he was affectionately referred to as Pop. Pops eighty-six years of life yielded numerous transitions and changes in various areas and aspects of his living, or crossings as Dad alluded to these transitions. This book attempts to capture and share many of these crossings. Yet, more than relating just the actual crossings, the hope is that readers will discover in these pages inspiration and motivation for their own journey crossings. By reflecting upon how one of Gods children--Elam S. Kurtz--embraced the transitions and crossings of life with great vision, deep faith, and enormous energy, may we also learn, and put into practice, the great lessons of life, seeking to serve God and humankind with our very best.

Motivation is key to substance use behavior change. Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.
Latin American State Building in Comparative Perspective
Latin American State Building in Comparative Perspective provides an account of long-run institutional development in Latin America that emphasizes the social and political foundations of state-building processes. The study argues that societal dynamics have path-dependent consequences at two critical points: the initial consolidation of national institutions in the wake of independence, and at the time when the 'social question' of mass political incorporation forced its way into the national political agenda across the region during the Great Depression.
