"Résistance" a initialement été publié en décembre 1944. La résurgence d'actes aux relents nazis, le racisme et l'antisémitisme qui connaissent un regain de vitalité, ont poussé l'Abbé Michel Lémonon a en souhaiter cette réédition qui comporte trois parties : "la première est la reproduction intégrale de l’édition de 1944. La seconde redonne ma conférence du 20 octobre de la même année, publiée immédiatement dans mon journal "La Paix" : j’y parlais de "l’épuration". La troisième, en conclusion, redonne mon allocution du 10 mars 1993 publiée par "L’Impartial".
Laurent ou L'itinéraire d'un prêtre-ouvrier
Michel Lémonon n'a pas voulu écrire sa propre histoire à la première personne du singulier : le " je " était encombrant, délicat à mettre en scène et trop lourd de subjectivité. Se défiant de lui-même, il a instauré sa propre mise à distance pour pouvoir écrire. Il s'est identifié à un personnage fictif, qui n'est autre que son double et auquel il a donné pour nom son second prénom, Laurent. Il lui fallait ce retrait pour évoquer les événements marquants de sa vie. Son récit autobiographique s'arrête peu avant la condamnation des prêtres-ouvriers, le 1er mars 1954, date à laquelle Rome avait fixé son ultimatum pour mettre fin à " cette expérience, telle qu'elle a(vait) évolué jusqu'à ce jour ". Ce diktat signifiait pour eux le déni de leur apostolat. Il les plaçait devant un dilemme difficile à résoudre : devaient-ils obéir à l'injonction de leur hiérarchie qui les avait envoyés en mission ou rester au travail ? Michel Lémonon n'a pas dévoilé les intentions de Laurent. Il a préféré clore son récit par l'évocation de la nuit, suggérant la déréliction de son personnage et le choix impossible auquel il fut confronté.

Unrecognized Resistance
This volume is an edited summary of what transpired at a unique colloquium held in the Salle Mdicis of the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris in December 2000, and hosted by the president of the French Senate. The results highlight the importance of historical documentation of this period of tragedy and heroism. Those present acknowledged the special nature of the friendship between France and the United States, more than half a century after that unique time of cooperation between French and Americans during the Resistance.
