This book contains a selection of contributions presenting the latest research in the field of computers in education and, more specifically, in e-Learning. It reflects the diverse scenario of the application of computers in the educational field by describing previous experiences and addressing some of the present key issues. These include issues such as Learning Management Systems as well as innovative aspects such as personalized or ubiquitous learning.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 13th European Conference on Evolutionary Computation in Combinatorial Optimization, EvoCOP 2013, held in Vienna, Austria, in April 2013, colocated with the Evo* 2013 events EuroGP, EvoBIO, EvoMUSART, and EvoApplications. The 23 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 50 submissions. The papers present the latest research and discuss current developments and applications in metaheuristics - a paradigm to effectively solve difficult combinatorial optimization problems appearing in various industrial, economic, and scientific domains. Prominent examples of metaheuristics are ant colony optimization, evolutionary algorithms, greedy randomized adaptive search procedures, iterated local search, simulated annealing, tabu search, and variable neighborhood search. Applications include scheduling, timetabling, network design, transportation and distribution, vehicle routing, the travelling salesman problem, packing and cutting, satisfiability, and general mixed integer programming.
At the heart of the optimization domain are mathematical modeling of the problem and the solution methodologies. The problems are becoming larger and with growing complexity. Such problems are becoming cumbersome when handled by traditional optimization methods. This has motivated researchers to resort to artificial intelligence (AI)-based, nature-inspired solution methodologies or algorithms. The Handbook of AI-based Metaheuristics provides a wide-ranging reference to the theoretical and mathematical formulations of metaheuristics, including bio-inspired, swarm-based, socio-cultural, and physics-based methods or algorithms; their testing and validation, along with detailed illustrative solutions and applications; and newly devised metaheuristic algorithms.
