Un manual amb materials pràctics de treball i continguts que responen a les necessitats d'una contínua actualització de l'ensenyament de llengües estrangeres en una perspectiva empírica i teòrica, i que al mateix temps recull i integra els principals corrents científics dels estudis anglesos, tenint en compte les directrius introduïdes per l'Espai Europeu d'Educació Superior. La novetat d'aquest manual resideix a oferir a la xarxa i a la disposició de qualsevol usuari informació relacionada amb el contingut del llibre; textos, exercicis autocorrectius i activitats. Exploring Discourse and Ideology Through Corpora
This book explores discourse mainly through corpus linguistics methods. Indeed, Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies has become a widely used approach for the critical (or non-critical) analysis of discourses in recent times. The book focuses on the analysis of different kinds of discourse, but most particularly on those which attempt to unveil social attitudes and values. Although a corpus methodology is deemed crucial in all research found here, it should not be inferred that a single, uniform technique is applied, but a wide variety of them, often shaped by the software which has been used. Also, more than one (qualitative or quantitative) methodology or drawing from various relevant sources is often called for in the critical analysis of discourses.

Concebut com una introducció per a la fascinant matèria de “Història lingüística de l’anglès”, aquest llibre pretén introduir el desenvolupament de l’anglès d’una manera concreta. El manual proporciona la formació teòrica necessària que explica els canvis bàsics en la història de la llengua anglesa i inclou activitats i exàmens al final de cada secció on els estudiants poden posar en pràctica el que han llegit, après o sobre el que han reflexionat. Per tant, als estudiants se’ls ofereix l’oportunitat de practicar el que han llegit i après a través de les seves pròpies exploracions.

The book opens with a general section, in which Richard Hogg examines the relationship between linguistics and philology, Enrique Bernárdez analyzes syntactic change from the point of view of catastrophe theory, Roger Sell suggests a pragmatic analysis of historical data, and Norman Blake and Jacek Fisiak re-open the debate on periodization in the history of English. The rest of the papers is grouped in four sections: Phonology and Writing, Morphology and Syntax, Lexicology and Semantics, and Varieties of English and Studies on Individual Texts. An index of names and a subject index complete the volume.

Aquest volum està dissenyat per satisfer les demandes de l'Espai Europeu d'Educació Superior als programes del Grau on s'estudia l'anglès com a llengua estrangera. Les diferents seccions d'aquest llibre s'inclouen els antecedents teòrics necessaris per adonar de les principals qüestions tractades en la lexicologia actual, és a dir, la morfologia, la formació de paraules, la fraseologia, el significat lèxic i el canvi lèxic. Un altre aspecte important al llarg del llibre és el contrast entre el tractament de les paraules pels lexicògrafs i el tractament pels lingüistes. Tots els capítols inclouen una sèrie d'activitats i proves, on els estudiants tenen l'oportunitat de practicar el que han llegit i aprendre a través de les seves pròpies exploracions.
