Abstract: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major public health burden with increasing incidence and mortality worldwide. Arising almost exclusively on the background of chronic liver disease, the tumour microenvironment plays a tremendous role in the occurrence and progression of HCC. With the emergence of checkpoint inhibitor-based combination therapies as first-line therapy in advanced HCC, the tumour microenvironment has drawn increasing attention as a target for novel therapeutic approaches. In fact, checkpoint-inhibitor-based immunotherapies currently dominate clinical studies on HCC therapy. Importantly, whilst checkpoint-inhibitor-based immune-oncology primarily targets T-cells, th...

Painlevé Equations and Related Topics

This is a proceedings of the international conference "Painleve Equations and Related Topics" which was taking place at the Euler International Mathematical Institute, a branch of the Saint Petersburg Department of the SteklovInstitute of Mathematicsof theRussian Academy of Sciences, in Saint Petersburg on June 17 to 23, 2011. The survey articles discuss the following topics: general ordinary differentialequations, Painleve equations and their generalizations, Painleve property, discrete Painleve equations, properties of solutions of all mentioned above equations, reductions ofpartial differential equationsto Painleve equations and their generalizations, ordinary differentialequation systems equivalent to Painleve equations and their generalizations, and applications of the equations and the solutions."

Painleve Transcendents

At the turn of the twentieth century, the French mathematician Paul Painleve and his students classified second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations with the property that the location of possible branch points and essential singularities of their solutions does not depend on initial conditions. It turned out that there are only six such equations (up to natural equivalence), which later became known as Painleve I-VI. Although these equations were initially obtainedanswering a strictly mathematical question, they appeared later in an astonishing (and growing) range of applications, including, e.g., statistical physics, fluid mechanics, random matrices, and orthogonal polynomials. ...

Conflicting Loyalties and the State in Post-Soviet Russia and Eurasia

The final chapter relates the evolution of these conflicting loyalties to the global weakening of the nation-state, and distinguishes what is particular to the Soviet state and its demise from more significant questions of analytical importance posed by the collapse of a major contemporary multi-national state.

Bäcklund and Darboux Transformations

This book is devoted to a classical topic that has undergone rapid and fruitful development over the past 25 years, namely Backlund and Darboux transformations and their applications in the theory of integrable systems, also known as soliton theory. The book consists of two parts. The first is a series of introductory pedagogical lectures presented by leading experts in the field. They are devoted respectively to Backlund transformations of Painleve equations, to the dressing methodand Backlund and Darboux transformations, and to the classical geometry of Backlund transformations and their applications to soliton theory. The second part contains original contributions that represent new developments in the theory and applications of these transformations. Both the introductorylectures and the original talks were presented at an International Workshop that took place in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada). This volume covers virtually all recent developments in the theory and applications of Backlund and Darboux transformations.

Ramanujan

The letters that Ramanujan wrote to G. H. Hardy on January 16 and February 27, 1913, are two of the most famous letters in the history of mathematics. These and other letters introduced Ramanujan and his remarkable theorems to the world and stimulated much research, especially in the 1920s and 1930s. This book brings together many letters to, from, and about Ramanujan. The letters came from the National Archives in Delhi, the Archives in the State of Tamil Nadu, and a variety of other sources. Helping to orient the reader is the extensive commentary, both mathematical and cultural, by Berndt and Rankin; in particular, they discuss in detail the history, up to the present day, of each mathematical result in the letters. Containing many letters that have never been published before, this book will appeal to those interested in Ramanujan's mathematics as well as those wanting to learn more about the personal side of his life. Ramanujan: Letters and Commentary was selected for the CHOICE list of Outstanding Academic Books for 1996.
