The aim of this book is to discuss the emergent forms of educational processes observed in the context of late modernity, mobilizing the contribution of the social sciences. Through a plurality of educational subjects, this publication provides an overview of the contribution of schooling to the construction of late modernity.
This volume challenges prevailing understanding of the two great founders of sociological thought. In a detailed and systematic way the author demonstrates how Marx and Durkheim gradually developed the fundamental frameworks for sociological materialism and idealism. While most recent interpreters of Marx have placed alienation and subjectivity at the centre of his work, Professor Alexander suggests that it was the later Marx’s very emphasis on alienation that allowed him to avoid conceptualizing subjectivity altogether. In Durkheim’s case, by contrast, the author argues that such objectivist theorizing informed the early work alone, and he demonstrates that in his later writings Durkheim elaborated an idealist theory that used religious life as an analytical model for studying the institutions of secular society.

In this book, we try to understand how the modernity of societies had become the main source that gave birth to the symbolism, which ultimately became the center of the universe by defining the identity of the human being and by acting on its way of living, of acting, and of thinking and becoming the main basis of the existence of all societies. Symbolism constitutes a new approach, allowing science to determine the hidden meaning and complexity of symbolic objects through a system of symbolic representation. The latter allows us to know who we really are as a human being and to understand how today's world works. Indeed, everything that exists on this planet is based on symbolism; we cannot understand today's social reality outside symbolism.
Drawing extensively on the research findings of natural and social sciences both in America and Europe, Reframing the Social argues for a critical realist and systemist social ontology, designed to shed light on current debates in social theory concerning the relationship of social ontology to practical social research, and the nature of 'the social'. It explores the works of the systems theorist Mario Bunge in comparison with the approach of Niklas Luhmann and critical social systems theorists, to challenge the commonly held view that the systems-based approach is holistic in nature and necessarily downplays the role of human agency.
