Das Spannungsfeld "Glaube und Vernunft" ist eine Kernfrage sowohl christlicher als auch muslimischer Theologie. Bereits in den Offenbarungsschriften selbst wird ansatzweise die Frage diskutiert, inwieweit die Vernunft eine eigenständige Quelle der Gotteserkenntnis und eine kritische Instanz für die Prüfung der Glaubenswahrheiten ist. Beide Weltreligionen rezipieren von ihren Anfängen Werke und Gedanken der griechischen Philosophie. Umstritten bleibt die Reichweite der Vernunft in Glaubensfragen, besonders bei Themen wie Freiheit und Gehorsam, Allmacht Gottes und Wahrheitsansprüche anderer Religionen. In den gegenwärtigen, weltanschaulich pluralen Diskursen sowie im interreligiösen Gespräch eröffnet die Annahme der Vernünftigkeit der Offenbarung eine grundlegende Möglichkeit zur Verständigung. As liberal democracies include increasingly diverse and multifaceted populations, the longstanding debate about the role of the state in religious education and the place of religion in public life seems imperative now more than ever. The maintenance of religious schools and the planning of religious education curricula raise a profound challenge. Too much state supervision can be conceived as interference in religious freedom and as a confinement of the right to cultural liberty. Too little supervision can be seen as neglecting the development of the liberal values required to live and work in a democratic society and as abandoning those who within their communities wish to attain a more rigorous education for citizenship and democracy. This book draws together leading educationalists, philosophers, theologians, and social scientists to explore issues, problems, and tensions concerning religious education in a variety of international settings. The contributors explore the possibilities and limitations of religious education in preparing citizens in multicultural and multi-religious democratic societies.
Religion and Violence
In this volume, the authors attempt to speak freely about the potential in religions both for violence and peace. I am confident that many impulses from this work will also impact the direction of churches and other religious communities, such that religions, all together, will try to mobilize the members of their communities to actively contribute to world peace. In this way, religions will be perceived as part of the solution for world peace, enabling them to move beyond the stigma of their damaged reputations.

This volume is a tribute to our esteemed colleague Professor John Martin Hull for his exceptional academic achievements in the field of religious education. Especially worth mentioning are his worldwide continuous efforts in trying to realize interreligious education and interreligious learning in public schools.
